ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose celebrated its 2013 Senior Day by extending its season-long shutout streak to 11 matches behind a 2-0
Northeast-10 Conference victory versus Saint Anselm this afternoon at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights (10-1-1/7-0-1 NE-10) scored early and late in the first half to account for the game's two strikes.
Prior to the match, seniors
Sydney Bond,
Jessica Gerski,
Carmelina Puopolo,
Allison Schmidt,
Niki Smith,
Laura Taylor, and La'Quilla Upton were honored for their outstanding careers in a Golden Knights uniform.
Saint Rose, ranked #3 in the
NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II Poll for the third consecutive week, then proceeded to dictate the pace throughout the afternoon by securing a 23-3 shot advantage.
Taylor came up with the game-winner with a mere 9:22 elapsed when she collected a feed from Smith, dribbled left, and fired her shot low to the short side. Bond then tallied her team-leading seventh strike by finishing inside the far right post off a pass from sophomore midfielder
Kristin Carr with 37:54 gone by.
For Saint Anselm (5-5-1/4-4-0 NE-10), freshman Cassie Quattropani and junior Gabriella Primera each played a half between the posts and made eight saves collectively to keep the Hawks within relative striking distance. At the other end, Gerski and freshman
Ashley Homer were called upon to stir aside one shot-on-goal as the backline of Upton, Thompson and sophomore
Nicole Shively diffused the few threats Saint Anselm was able to create.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a 3:00 pm non-conference date Monday at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. Meanwhile, Saint Anselm travels to Rindge, NH Wednesday for a 4:00 pm match at conference rival Franklin Pierce.
