ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose received an outstanding pitching performance and some timely hitting that enabled the Golden Knights to win the opener, 6-4, of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with visiting Bentley University today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Falcons (12-24/6-13 NE-10) then pounded out 14 hits to take the nightcap 9-4.
Junior right-hander
Nick Polsinelli shook off somewhat of a shaky start and allowed just two hits between the second and eighth innings to collect his second win of the year. Polsinelli was dialed in for most of the day. He retired 17 straight at one point and wound up allowing three runs on five hits while fanning eight, with only one walk, throughout 8.0 innings of work.
He then handed the ball to freshman right-hander
Ryan Harper who worked the ninth for his school record eighth save this spring.
Senior right fielder
Garret Keenan delivered the biggest blast of the game with a two-run homer over the left field fence that turned a 4-3 Saint Rose lead into a 6-3 cushion.
Bentley previously jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first, but the Golden Knights (15-24/8-14 NE-10) got one back in the bottom half before adding two more in the third and another in the fourth to go up 4-2.
Sophomore left fielder
Caleb Gleason smacked a two out double down the left field line and senior first baseman
Grant Smith followed with a two run single that pushed across Gleason and freshman third baseman
Jevonte Osterhout, who legged out an infield base hit to open the third.
Keenan wound up 2-for-3 with three RBI. Osterhout, Gleason, and Smith all finished with two hits as well to lead the Golden Knights attack. Junior catcher Kevin Korwek went to 2-for-3 and also scored a run to pace the Bentley offense.
In the second game, the Falcons snapped a 2-2 deadlock by taking advantage of a pair of Saint Rose errors to go up 3-2 in the fifth. Bentley then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth and three more in the eighth, before the Golden Knights pushed across a pair in the ninth.
Keenan stole his 16th base and once again went 2-for-4 to register his team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the year, while Gleason singled to extend his current hit streak to six games.
Junior catcher Greg Baggett smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence in the first and senior third baseman Ross Curley went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI and two runs scored for Bentley. Sophomore right-hander Greg Ciavarella gave up just two earned runs and allowed eight hits over 8.0 innings on the way to his first win of the season.
Prior to the game, 10 Saint Rose student-athletes were honored in a brief ceremony in honor of “Senior Day”. The group included Polsinelli, Keenan, Smith, second baseman
Michael Carbone, center fielder
Ryan Price, infielder
Ryan Burke, pitchers
Doug Dulin,
David Batchelder, and
Richard Egloff; and catcher
Nick Dowen.
Looking ahead, both teams have noon doubleheaders listed on their docket for tomorrow. The Golden Knights will head to Felician for a non-league date in Lodi, NJ. Meanwhile, the Falcons will welcome NE-10 rival New Haven to Waltham, MA.
