ALBANY, N.Y. –  The College of Saint Rose has its sight set on another historic campaign as the 2022 season begins this weekend.
Â
The Golden Knights, who are ranked #2 in the United Soccer Coaches National Preseason Poll and favored to successfully defend their 2021 Northeast-10 Conference Championship, open their campaign Saturday at Daemen University.
Â
Another road dates follows the next Wednesday before Jefferson University arrives in the Capital Region for the home opener on Saturday, September 3. NE10 action gets rolling on Saturday, September 10 when Franklin Pierce University comes to town.
Â
Nine starters and six of the top-seven point producers are back from last year's squad that won a record ninth NE10 title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament National Championship Final, falling 3-2 in double-overtime to Grand Valley State.
Â
Among the key returnees are pair of All-Americans in back
Sanna Rein and forward
Mia Klammer.
Â
The latter put up astronomical numbers, finishing 20th in the country with a league-leading 14 goals and winding up 18th nationally behind a league best 34 points. Rein helped anchor a defense that was 12th in the country in goals allowed, posting an 0.549 team goals-against-average.
Â
The two departed starters were also All-Americans and thus leave big shoes to fill.
Ciera Lundy played a major role in the back, while keeper
Marika Laurendeau finished eighth in the country with an NE10 best 11 shutouts and set a school record with 69 career goalkeeper wins.
Â
Seventeen talented newcomers join the program to afford the team its usual quality depth. Overall, the Golden Knights should be poised to build on their resume throughout the autumn.
Notes: Saint Rose has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances within the past 19 traditional competitive seasons (not including 2020) and is one of only three NCAA Division II sides, along with Grand Valley State and West Florida, that has won at least 22 matches on three occasions. The Golden Knights won 24 contests in 2009 and in their 2011 National Championship campaign, and posted 23 victories in 2010. In addition, the Golden Knights have made eight NCAA National Semifinal appearances (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2019, and 2021) within the past 14 years and made their second national championship final showing last season.
