Box Score

ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose rebounded from a 4-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter to get to within a goal in the final five minutes, but Chestnut Hill hung on to upend the Golden Knights 11-9 in their home opener today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

The game was fairly evenly played with Saint Rose (0-2) manufacturing a 37-34 shot advantage, winning 12 of 13 faceoff opportunities and turning the ball over three fewer times than the Griffins (1-2), who are ranked #14 in this week's United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association NCAA Division II Poll.

Senior attack Brett McAuliffe and junior midfielder Ryan McFee had two goals apiece, while junior attack Colin Sorber had a goal and two assists for the Golden Knights. Freshman goalkeeper Joe Shapiro recorded nine saves.

Saint Rose turned the tide in the second period by scoring four times in the opening six minutes to deadlock it 4-4, before Chestnut Hill countered with a pair to take a 6-4 halftime lead.

Saint Rose drew even again in the opening two minutes of the third quarter when senior midfielder Rich Bamberger finished a Sorber feed and McFee scored unassisted.

The momentum swung again however as Chestnut Hill boosted its advantage back to four, 10-6, with 12:00 left in the game. The Golden simply regrouped and mounted another offensive. Junior attack Kevin Fleming found the back of the net with his team-leading third strike this season and then set up fellow junior attack Evan Helming who scored on a man-up situation. Sorber then scored off a Bamberger pass that made it 10-9 Chestnut Hill with 5:17 to go.

Unfortunately, Saint Rose came up empty on its final two possessions while Chestnut afforded itself some breathing room via the game's final tally with 1:01 showing on the clock.

Senior attack Michael Melnychenko finished with three goals and an assist, while senior midfielder Zachary Donnelly wound up with a pair of goals to lead Chestnut Hill.

Looking ahead, both squads have 1:00 pm road games this Saturday, March 8. The Golden Knights are scheduled to visit Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester, while the Griffins have a meeting at NYIT in Old Westbury, NY.
