Box Score
ALBANY-The College of Saint Rose fell behind 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes and was never able to fully recover in an 11-6 setback to Mercy this afternoon at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights (0-4) got back to within a goal on three occasions, but the Mavericks (5-1) scored five unanswered times throughout a 17 minute stretch that spanned the third and fourth quarters to win their third straight. Mercy generated a 37-31 advantage in shots and won 12 of 20 faceoff attempts, although Saint Rose gathered in 36 groundballs as opposed to 32 for the Mavericks.
Junior attack
Evan Helming had two goals and a pair of assists, while senior attack
Brett McAuliffe had a goal and two helpers to lead the Saint Rose offense. Junior attacks
Colin Sorber and
Kevin Fleming, and sophomore midfielder
Cameron Fischer accounted for the remaining three goals.
Defensively, freshman goalkeeper
Joe Shapiro made seven of his 12 saves after halftime, while sophomore longstick midfielder
Bobby Primo and junior defenseman
Pat Sunday each caused three turnovers.
Fleming and Helming scored 22 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the first quarter to make it a 3-2 affair. The Golden Knights then took advantage of a man-up situation when Helming fed Sorber to make it 5-3 Mercy with 7:36 to go until intermission. Two minutes later, Helming set up McAuliffe, before Mercy junior attack Jesse Wood, the nation's leading point producer, found the back of the net with 3:21 to go that afforded the Mavericks a 6-4 halftime lead.
Saint Rose remained resilient though and once again got back to within one at 6-5 when Helming collected a feed from McAuliffe and finished with less than two minutes elapsed in the third quarter. However, the Mavericks then put the game out of reach.
Wood wound up with six goals and an assist while freshman midfielder Chris Lopez added a pair for the Mavericks, who are receiving votes in the most recent
United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) NCAA Division II Coaches Poll.
Looking ahead, both squads return to league action this Saturday, March 15. The Golden Knights will host
Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce at 1:00 pm while the Mavericks will travel to Old Westbury, NY for a 12:00 pm date at East Coast Conference partner NYIT.
