GOLDEN KNIGHTS ROAR BACK TO UPEND AIC IN OVERTIME

Sophomore attack Kevin Fleming scored the game-winner in overtime to lift the Golden Knights past AIC today.
Box Score

ALBANY – Sophomore attack Kevin Fleming scored the tying goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation and then converted the game-winner with 3:24 left in overtime to lift The College of Saint Rose to a 9-8 victory against Northeast-10 Conference rival American International today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

Junior attack Brett McAuliffe set up both strikes to allow the Golden Knights (2-5/2-1 NE-10) to rebound from a 5-2 halftime deficit in their first home game in more than a month. Fleming finished with three goals, while McAuliffe scored his team-leading 15th and 16th strikes of the season. Junior goalie Nick Longo made seven saves as Saint Rose manufactured a 48-19 shot differential.

Sophomore midfielder Kris Miller had three assists while fellow sophomore midfielder Louie Buccella tallied his first two strikes of the year. Freshman attack Joey Woodland and sophomore midfielder Evan Helming also found the back of the net.

The Golden Knights outscored the Yellow Jackets (1-7/0-4 NE-10) 3-0 in the third quarter to tie the game 5-5 and then went up 6-5 after Fleming created room for himself with 12:14 left in the fourth. However, American International responded with two goals a mere six seconds apart to go back up 7-6 with 11:31 to go. Helming then finished a Miller feed to deadlock it once again 7-7, but freshman midfielder Sean Kelleher made it 8-7 American International with 5:16 showing on the clock.

Both teams gained possession during the ensuing three minutes and the Yellow Jackets appeared to be in good shape after Saint Rose was whistled for concurrent penalties. The Golden Knights held American International at bay during that time frame and then the game got interesting when the Yellow Jackets were called for a two minute major that helped set the stage for Fleming's final strikes, including the game-winner that sailed into the lower half through a pair of defenders.

Sophomore midfielder Bobby Spano scored three of his four goals throughout the opening six minutes to help American International jump out to a 4-1 first quarter lead. Keller and junior defenseman Dan Gryszko added two strikes apiece to help the American International cause.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return home Saturday to host conference rival and fifth-ranked Merrimack at 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets are scheduled to host Franklin Pierce Friday at 4:00 pm in Springfield, MA.
