Box Score
DOBBS FERRY, NY-The College of Saint Rose used a balanced attack and its usual tight defense to upend host Mercy College 3-1 in a non-conference tilt earlier today. Five different players figured in the scoring column for the third-ranked Golden Knights (11-0-1) whose usual stingy defensive limited the Mavericks (9-0-2) to a mere one shot-on-target.
However, that one shot did lead to a goal and thus Saint Rose had its season-long and school record shutout streak snapped at a staggering 11-plus straight games and 1,028 minutes. The NCAA Division II record is held by the 1995 Franklin Pierce squad that posted 15 consecutive clean sheets. Regardless, the Golden Knights were the second from last school, men or women at any NCAA level, to allow a goal this autumn.
At the other end, junior midfielder
Emily Benjamin, freshman midfielder
Emily Meeks and sophomore midfielder
Kristin Carr all scored for Saint Rose, while junior back
Jourdan Thompson and senior midfielder
Laura Taylor each recorded an assist.
Benjamin put the Golden Knights up 1-0 at the 16:22 mark when she drove home a shot from 20-yards out for her first goal in a Golden Knights uniform. However, Mercy responded less than two minutes later when senior forward Crystal Mena redirected a pass from senior midfielder Stephanie Manta to square it at 1-1, which is where it stood at intermission.
Saint Rose then proceeded to engineer a 9-3 shot advantage throughout the second half. Meeks tallied the game-winner when she converted a pass from Thompson with 58:37 gone by and Carr added an insurance marker 17 minutes later when she found the back of the net after collecting a pass from Taylor.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights return home Wednesday to meet
Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption. Kickoff is set for 5:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are back on the pitch Saturday for a 12:00 pm East Coast Conference match versus Molloy.
