SAINT ROSE CELEBRATES HOME OPENER WITH 5-0 WIN VERSUS NYACK

Junior midfielder Allison Schmidt had a goal to help lead the Golden Knights to a 5-0 victory versus Nyack this evening.
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose controlled the tempo from the outset on the way to a 5-0 victory against Nyack in its home-opener tonight at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The top-ranked Golden Knights (2-0) scored twice within a 1:07 stretch throughout the initial nine minutes and then tacked on three more in the final 25 minutes to put the finishing touches on.

Freshman back Amanda Vasquez scored a pair of goals and junior forward Carmelina Puopolo added a goal and set up two others to pace the Saint Rose charge. Junior midfielders Sydney Bond and Allison Schmidt accounted for the other two strikes.

Puopolo tallied what held up as the game-winner with 6:59 elapsed when she bent a corner kick from the right flag inside the upper-far post. Puopolo then drove a shot from 12-yards out that Nyack sophomore keeper Madeline Barbarino could not gather in. The subsequent rebound ricocheted to Bond who calmly placed inside the net.

The game stood 2-0 for the next 57 minutes until Vasquez knocked home a loose ball near the Nyack doorstep and then one-touched a chip from Puopolo on the right flank that made it a 4-0 affair. Schmidt then scored the game's final goal when she redirected a beautiful cross from the right sideline that came off the foot of senior back Marisah Case.

The Golden Knights wound up with a 14-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 differential in threats on-target, and manufactured six corner kicks, while yielding only a pair.

Junior keeper Jessica Gerski and sophomore keeper Lauren Minkoff made three saves collectively for Saint Rose, while Barbarino turned aside five shots for the Warriors (0-1).

Looking ahead, Saint Rose travels to UMass Lowell for a key 3:00 pm tilt on Saturday.  The match marks the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads.  The River Hawks are ranked #17 in the NSCAA preseason poll. Meanwhile, Nyack is back on the road for its conference-opener at Post University in Waterbury, CT this Thursday. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm.
