Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose and
Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern New Hampshire played to a 1-1 draw in what turned out to be a thrilling game that had gotten off to a slow pace this afternoon at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.
Both squads hit the crossbar in the second overtime session and both teams also found the post during regulation, but neither could secure the game-winner after they each scored five minutes apart in the opening 15 minutes of the second stanza.
The Golden Knights, the top-ranked team in the first two
NSCAA regular season national polls, generated a 20-10 shot advantage and manufactured 11 corner kicks, without allowing one, while controlling play throughout the latter part of the first half and most of the second period.
Junior forward
Carmelina Puopolo made it 1-0 Golden Knights (4-0-1/2-0-1 NE-10) with 54:16 elapsed after she collected a short pass from freshman midfielder
Kelly Johnson and one-touched the ball inside the lower left post. However, the Penmen (4-1-1/2-1-1 NE-10) responded 10 minutes later when Bethi Ledoux lofted a ball from 30-yards out that sailed just under the crossbar.
Junior keeper
Jessica Gerski made two saves on the day, both of which were spectacular on back-to-back shots midway through the second overtime session. Meanwhile, senior keeper Maggie Weldon recorded seven saves for Southern New Hampshire.
Puopolo rattled the crossbar in the opening two minutes of the second extra session, while senior midfielder Kahleigh Roberge did the same in the final 10 seconds that almost completely spoiled a day in which the 2011 Saint Rose National Championship Team was honored in a brief pregame ceremony.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Tuesday to host conference rival Southern New Hampshire at 5:30 pm. That game is scheduled to be streamed live on
