LATE GOAL PROPELS SAINT ROSE PAST LEMOYNE TO HELP EARN FIRST POINTS OF UPSTATE CHALLENGE

Junior forward Carmelina Puopolo assisted on the game-winner and added a goal during tonight's 3-2 win.
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team netted a goal during the 89th minute to break a 2-2 tie and upend Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne, 3-2, during a Northeast-10 Conference game this evening at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex.  The win also gives the Golden Knights the first victory of the season-long Upstate Challenge rivalry series between the two institutions.

During the first half, Saint Rose (4-0/2-0 NE-10) took a 1-0 lead at the 21st minute with a pair of freshmen connecting.  Midfielder Kristin Carr directed a pass into the middle of the box that was found by the head of fellow classmate and midfielder, Nicole Shively.  Shively directed the ball off her head into the bottom right of the net for the only goal of the first half.  The Golden Knights generated 14 shots while yielding only one to Le Moyne (2-2/0-2 NE 10) during the opening stanza.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Saint Rose extended its lead to 2-0 with Shively earning the assist on the score by junior forward Carmelina Puopolo.  The Dolphins, however, cut into the lead during the 61st minute as junior midfielder Kate Deasy snuck a shot just under the crossbar from 20 yards out.

With the Dolphins gaining momentum, senior forward Christie Morano seized the moment by putting in the equalizer with just over six minutes remaining in regulation.  Morano played the ball all the way to net after getting past her defender to even the score at 2-2.

As the clock neared the end of regular time, Puopolo gained control of the ball and dribbled down the side looking to find one of her teammates grouped in the middle.  The serve by Puopolo was placed perfectly into the waiting reception of freshman midfielder Amanda Vasquez, who put in the game-winner in the back of the net during the 89th minute to clinch victory for the Golden Knights.

Saint Rose ended the match with a 30-9 advantage in shots as well as a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.  Junior goalkeeper Jessica Gerski and freshman goalkeeper Kallina Haase each spent a half in goal for Saint Rose, with Haase picking up the victory as she made five saves during the second half.  Dolphin keeper, freshman Tori Corsao, came up with 10 saves in the effort while playing all 90 minutes.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose continues its home-stand with a 1:00 pm kickoff set for Saturday against conference rival Southern New Hampshire.  There will be a brief pregame ceremony honoring the 2011 National Championship team. Meanwhile, Le Moyne returns home to play Saturday as well, hosting NE-10 foe Stonehill at 12:00 pm.
