ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outscored visiting Southern New Hampshire University 4-2 throughout the second period and turned in arguably its best defensive outing of the year on the way to an 8-6 triumph over the Penmen today at Sullivan Field.
The Golden Knights (6-6) snapped a two-game skid, got themselves back to the .500 mark and surrendered a season-low six goals to boot.
Seven different players found the back of the net for Saint Rose led by freshman attackman
Kevin Fleming and freshman midfielder
Kris Miller who had two goals apiece. Fleming added a pair of assists, both in the opening period.
Sophomore goalie
Nick Longo made five of his seven saves in the second half to hold off the Penmen (3-10). Longo also caused a turnover in the waning moments and slung the ball high into the air to diffuse a late Southern New Hampshire scoring threat.
Senior goalie Brendan O'Brien stopped 11 shots for the Penmen, who were outshot by a 32-24 margin. Meanwhile, freshman attackman Jeremy Buckley and junior defenseman Ryan Woodford each collected two goals.
The Golden Knights never trailed, although the Penmen struck even twice in the first half. Freshman attackman Taylor Warden knotted things 2-2 with an unassisted tally just 28 seconds into the second period. Saint Rose initially took a 2-1 edge when freshman attackman
Colin Sorber finished off a feed from Fleming as time expired to conclude the opening frame.
The final tie of the contest lasted only a minute as Miller gave the Golden Knights the lead for good at the 13:32 mark of the second period. Miller's strike ignited a decisive 5-1 run that was capped when sophomore attackman
Brett McAuliffe picked up his team-leading 29th goal in the early stages of the third.
Southern New Hampshire whittled away at its deficit and got to within a pair following Buckley's strike with 8:25 to go. Neither club was able to light up the scoreboard the rest of the way, although the Penmen had three possessions over the final three minutes to get even. However, all three shot attempts sailed wide.
Saint Rose returns to action Saturday when the Golden Knights host American International College in their 2012 regular-season finale. Game time is set for 1:00 pm from Sullivan Field. Southern New Hampshire also caps its spring campaign with a 1:00 pm road date at Saint Michael's College Saturday.
