MANCHESTER, NH – The College of Saint Rose threw more than a slight scare at ninth-ranked Saint Anselm before bowing 10-6 to the host Hawks at Grappone Stadium this afternoon.
The Golden Knights (5-5) led 2-1 after the first quarter and were tied 4-4 at halftime before the Hawks struck four times in the third to take an 8-5 lead heading into the final period. Saint Rose pulled to within 8-6 with 12:14 remaining in the fourth, but two minutes later Saint Anselm (8-1) scored twice within a 62-second span to register its eighth straight victory since suffering a season-opening 7-6 setback at Molloy on February 25.
The Golden Knights generated a 37-32 shot advantage, including a 16-7 margin during their comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, and had 21 turnovers as opposed to 23 for the Hawks.
Freshman attackman
Kevin Fleming scored three goals while sophomore attackman
Brett McAuliffe, senior midfielder
Joe Pompo and junior attackman
Rich Bamberger had one each to pace Saint Rose. Freshman midfielder
Kris Miller added two assists, while sophomore goalkeeper
Nick Longo spearheaded the defensive effort with 10 saves.
The Golden Knights struck first as Fleming scored unassisted with 13:01 left in the first quarter and then finished a feed from Miller at the 7:21 mark to make it a 2-1 game. Saint Rose also built a 3-2 and 4-3 leads on Pompo and McAuliffe strikes, but the Hawks answered both times to draw even at intermission.
Saint Anselm then scored twice throughout the initial three minutes of the third quarter, before Bamberger converted a Miller feed to bring the Golden Knights back to within one, 6-5, with 7:33 left.
However, the Hawks fended off the Golden Knights late-game pressure by holding them to one goal the rest of the way to remove any chance of being upset on their own turf.
Freshman midfielder James Peters found the back of the net three times, while sophomore midfielder Ryan Mee and senior midfielder Tyler Steinetz scored twice each to lead the Saint Anselm offense. Junior goalkeeper Jonathon O'Reilly recorded seven of his 16 saves in the fourth quarter.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights face arguably their biggest test to date with a 1:00 pm game at top-ranked and defending national champion Mercyhurst on Saturday in Erie, PA. Opening faceoff is set for 12:00 pm. The Hawks on the other hand have a 7:00 pm home game versus
Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce on Saturday.
