STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELS GOLDEN KNIGHTS PAST ASSUMPTION

Junior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez posted her third "double-double" of the year to help lead the Golden Knights past Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption this evening.
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outscored visiting Assumption 36-15 throughout the second half on the way to a key 69-42 Northeast-10 Conference victory tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights 16-8/13-7 NE-10) avenged an early December 64-60 setback at Assumption and also snapped the Greyhounds (17-7/14-6 NE-10) three-game win streak that had allowed them to move into third place in the league standings.

Saint Rose, which entered the night in seventh place, shot 47.4 percent (27-for-57) from the floor and turned 19 Assumption miscues into 23 points.

Senior guard Ashley Rath scored 13 of her team-high 17 points after intermission and handed out a season-high five assists to lead the Golden Knights, who improved to 12-1 at home. Junior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez registered her third “double-double” of the year behind 14 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard Ola Shajuyigbe tossed in 16 points to help the cause.

Senior forward Kelly Meredith accounted for more than half of the Greyhounds' offensive production with 24 points thanks to 8-for-13 shooting from the floor, coupled with an 8-for-9 effort from the foul line.

Saint Rose walked into the locker room with a 33-27 advantage at the break after Shajuyigbe drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key with four seconds remaining.

That foreshadowed the impending second stanza. Senior forward Ali Johnson finished in the paint, Shajuyigbe drained another trey, and Sanchez hit a jumper that set the tone and boosted the Golden Knights advantage to 13, 40-27, with only two minutes gone by.

Assumption finally converted a field goal two minutes later when junior forward Sabrina Siciliano knocked down a jumper in the paint that made it 42-31 Saint Rose. A pair of layups 30 seconds apart within the next two minutes kept it an 11 point, 46-35, affair; but the Greyhounds managed only two more field goals as Saint Rose meticulously increased its lead.

Rath pretty much removed all doubt about the eventual outcome by draining her 200th career 3-pointer that made it 53-35 Golden Knights with 10:20 remaining. Rath thus became only the fourth player in program annals to reach that milestone.

Looking ahead to the final week of the season, both clubs have 1:30 pm conference dates on tap for Saturday. The Golden Knights will head to Springfield to take on American International, while the Greyhounds will host Pace University. Saint Rose will then play its regular-season finale on Tuesday when New Haven arrives in the Capital Region.
