ABOUT SANCHEZ-GONZALEZ: Team co-captain…Transferred prior to the start of the 2011-12 season from New Jersey Institute of Technology where she played two seasons for the Highlanders…Can play with her back to the basket and also face up…Solid defender who can also rebound…Strong and very athletic for her size…Has demonstrated leadership in bringing this young team together.
 
AS A JUNIOR: Made 10 starts and played in all 28 games…Finished the season with three “double-doubles”…Averaged 3.7 points and 4.9 rebounds per-game…Finished second on the team in rebounding…Named to the Northeast-10 Conference weekly honor roll (1/30/12)…Recorded her first points in a Golden Knights uniform during a 58-34 win against Concordia (11/11/11)…Scored a career-high 14 points and pulled in 10 rebounds during a 69-42 win versus Assumption (2/14/12)…Grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds, scored 10 points, and made three blocks in a 71-65 win versus Southern Connecticut State (2/4/12)….Came away with 13 rebounds in back-to-back games, a 60-56 triumph versus UMass Lowell (1/25/12) and  57-53 defeat at Franklin Pierce 1/28/12…Named to the NE-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll for both the fall and spring semesters in recognition of academic excellence.
 
AS A SOPHOMORE AT NJIT: Played in 22 games…Also made six starts…Averaged 3.1 points and 3.0 rebounds on a regular basis…Had six points, eight boards and three steals against Rhode Island (11/20/10)…Tossed in a season-high 10 points in her first career start versus Delaware State (11/24/10)…Nearly recorded a “double-double” via nine points and a season-best 13 rebounds versus Howard (12/22/10)…Wound up with six points and hauled in 10 caroms against Lehigh (12/9/10)…Contributed eight points and four rebounds in a Great West Conference quarterfinal contest against North Dakota (3/9/11).
 
AS A FRESHMAN AT NJIT: Appeared in 17 games off the bench…Put up season-highs of 12 points and eight rebounds versus Harvard (1/12/10)…Also grabbed eight boards versus Houston Baptist (2/18/10)…Registered six points and three caroms at Utah Valley (3/4/10).
 
GENERAL: Part of the Majadahonda club team that captured the Madrid Championships three years in a row (2006-08)…Team was runner-up in Spain and won international tournaments in Geneva and London in 2007…Squad also finished fourth in the Spanish National Championship in 2008…Said Shaquille O’Neal and Pau Gasol are the athletes she admires most…Favorite food is Spanish ham.
 
COACH HAAG ON SANCHEZ-GONZALEZ: “Maria enjoyed a good summer, improving her strength and vertical.  She will be looked upon as a leader this year, being named co-captain.  She has shown that she can rally this group together and be a vocal presence.  One of our key rebounders, I am expecting Maria to be one of our tough competitors in the low post.”
