Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose celebrated its annual “Senior Day” with a 3-0 non-conference win versus Mercy College this afternoon at
Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The first half was played somewhat evenly, but the Golden Knights (9-1-2) dictated the pace throughout the final 45 minutes and got all three of its goals from a pair of players who came off the bench.
Sophomore forward
Brittany Barry scored twice, including what held up as the game-winner, and sophomore midfielder
Meeghan Arno accounted for the third strike. Junior keeper
Jessica Gerski made two saves throughout 81 minutes, before being relieved by freshman
Kallina Haase.
As for Mercy, senior keeper Stephanie DiLegge recorded seven saves to keep the Mavericks (3-10-0) within striking distance.
Saint Rose, ranked #1 in the most recent
NSCAA/Continental Tire Top-25 Poll, struck with 37:37 gone by when senior back
Molly Harpster sprung Barry with a long through ball up the middle. Barry dribbled in alone on DiLegge, made a move, and slipped her shot to the left side that made it a 1-0 game at intermission.
Barry's second goal nearly mirrored her first. She found herself alone again when she gathered a feed from freshman forward
Kristin Carr, dribbled in and this time buried her shot inside the right post at the 66:47 mark. Arno then made 3-0 when she lined a direct kick from the right flank that deflected off of DiLegge and into top left corner with 80:36 expired.
The Golden Knights wound up with a 19-10 shot advantage, including a 10-2 differential in shots-on-target, and manufactured four corner kicks without yielding any to a Mercy squad that had dropped seven one-goal games entering today. However, Saint Rose only owned a 6-5 first half shot advantage before more than doubling its production with a 13-5 second half output.
Both teams engineered several chances to add to the scoring throughout the match. Mercy junior back Carla Hager hit the crossbar in the opening five minutes and sophomore midfielder MacKenzie Cochrane echoed that midway through the second period. Meanwhile, Saint Rose junior midfielder
Carmelina Puopolo created five shots, including a strike that rocked the left post in the 73rd minute and nearly added to her
Northeast-10 Conference leading 34 points (12-10-34) on the year.
Prior to the game, Harpster, senior midfielder
Marisah Case and senior back
Meagan McKinney were recognized for their outstanding careers in a Golden Knights uniform. They have been part of three consecutive NE-10 Championship teams and were members of the 2011 National Championship squad as well.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is on the road Wednesday with a 7:00 pm date at NE-10 rival Assumption in Worcester, MA. The Mavericks on the other hand are off until Saturday when they travel to Nyack, NY to face Nyack College for a 12:00 pm non-conference meeting.
