Box Score ALBANY – Senior guard
Ashley Rath's 3-pointer with one second left was off the mark as The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the 2011-12 campaign via a 67-65 setback versus Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University tonight. The Golden Knights fell to 7-1 this year at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium, while the Penmen remained hot by winning their fourth in a row overall.
Rath wound up with 21 points to lead Saint Rose (9-5/6-4 NE-10) in scoring for the 11th time this year. Senior guard
Ola Shajuyigbe added 13 points, while senior forward
Ali Johnson finished with eight points and 10 rebounds.
Additionally, junior forward
Maria Sanchez Gonzalez contributed season-highs of six points and nine boards in 17 minutes of reserve duty for the Golden Knights.
Southern New Hampshire (13-3/8-2 NE-10) junior forward Sloane Sorrell poured in a career-high 32 points on 14-of-19 shooting to lead all scorers. Junior guard Michelle DeRoma had 11 points, while sophomore forward Victoria Wiseman registered 10 points and six caroms.
The Penmen, who are receiving votes in the latest
USA Today ESPN Division II Poll, quickly overcame a three point halftime deficit by outscoring Saint Rose 14-4 throughout the opening 3:20 of the second period to take their largest lead of the evening, 44-37. Sorrell did most of the damage with three straight baskets during the surge. Wiseman capped it by finishing in the paint.
The Golden Knights responded with 13 unanswered points of their own to go up 50-44 with 11:17 to go. Shajuyigbe sparked things with a 3-pointer and then fed Johnson in the lane twice in a row. Freshman guard
Gabie Polce helped finish it off by finding Sanchez Gonzalez, who drained a jumper from the left corner.
Saint Rose still led by four, 63-59, with 3:25 left after Rath went 2-for-2 from the line. However, the Golden Knights were held without a field goal the rest of the way that allowed the Penmen to regain control. Sorrell put Southern New Hampshire up for good, 64-63, when she hit a layup as she was fouled. Saint Rose had two chances to either tie or take the lead over the final 28 seconds after DeRoma went 1-for-2 from the stripe to provide the final margin.
Both clubs return to league action this Saturday with a pair of 1:30 pm games on tap. The Golden Knights head to #9 Bentley University, while the Penmen return home to host the University of New Haven.
