SAINT ROSE TURNS UP DEFENSE TO PUT AWAY AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

Senior guard Ashley Rath was presented with a commemorative 1,000 point ball prior to today's contest
Box Score ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's basketball team held visiting American International College to just two first half field goals and built on its 11-point halftime lead on the way to a 58-42 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets today at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. It was the fifth time this year the Golden Knights held an opponent under 50 points.

Senior guard Ola Shajuyigbe led a balanced attack that saw nine Saint Rose (7-2/5-2 NE-10) players reach the scoring column. Shajuyigbe wound up with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Also, senior forward Alison McGrath contributed 10 points and tied her career-high with nine rebounds, while senior forward Ali Johnson nearly missed a “double-double” behind nine points and a like number of boards.

Freshman guard Alyssa Roach led all players with 19 points for American International (3-8/2-5 NE-10), which dropped its third decision in a row. Senior forward Rhea Pascal registered a “double-double” of her own with 10 points and 13 caroms.

Both teams got out of the gates slow, but the Golden Knights finally took control with an 11-1 run over the final 5:50 to turn a 10-9 edge into a 21-10 margin at the break. Johnson scored the first of 11 unanswered points for Saint Rose with a layup, then fed Shajuyigbe for a 3-pointer. Shajuyigbe tacked on a pair of free throws and junior forward Maria Sanchez Gonzalez finished things off with a layup.

The Yellow Jackets shot a mere 8.3 percent (2-for-24) from the floor throughout the opening 20 minutes and coughed the ball up eight times, which led to 11 Saint Rose points.

American International managed to cut its deficit to seven, 26-19, at the 16:37 mark of the second half after Pascal followed her own miss. The Yellow Jackets were within seven on four occasions throughout the first seven minutes, but Shajuyigbe triggered a decisive 17-2 spurt with three consecutive buckets and McGrath ended it with back-to-back jumpers. McGrath's final basket off a feed from senior guard Adrianna Gaeta put Saint Rose up 52-28 with 3:41 on the clock.

The Golden Knights, who are receiving votes in the latest USA Today ESPN Division II Poll, shot a blistering 57.7 percent (15-for-26) from the field in the second period and generated 13 more points off eight turnovers by American International to help their cause.

Up next, Saint Rose steps away from its league schedule next Friday when the Golden Knights head to C.W. Post for a non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm in Brookville, NY. Meanwhile, American International concluded the 2011 portion of its schedule with today's outing. The Yellow Jackets open up 2012 with a road contest at UMass Lowell on Tuesday, January 3.
