ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose took advantage of a pair of flurries in front of the Franklin Pierce goal en route to a 2-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory against the Ravens today at Sullivan Field at the Plumeri Complex. The 17th ranked Golden Knights (14-1-1/11-1-1 NE-10) generated a 15-7 shot advantage, including a 9-4 cushion in on-target threats, and manufactured 11 corner kicks while yielding only two throughout a match that featured the two clubs who have accounted for the last 11 NE-10 Championships.
Senior midfielder Gianna D'Errico drove in what held up as the game-winner with 18:39 gone by and then fellow senior midfielder
Brittany Godin added an insurance marker with 61:09 elapsed. Sophomore keeper
Jessica Gerski made two saves in each half for Saint Rose, while senior Jocelyn Leon deflected away seven shots for the Ravens (6-8-1/4-7-1 NE-10).
Saint Rose immediately pressured the Franklin Pierce third that yielded six corner kicks in the opening 12 minutes. On the seventh, the Ravens failed to clear and D'Errico jumped on a loose ball for her fourth strike of the year.
Pressure paid off again in the second half for the Golden Knights. Sophomore forward
Carmelina Puopolo turned and lined a shot that rattled the left post and rolled to senior midfielder
Aoife Herbert whose subsequent boot was blocked. Herbert's strike then caromed to Godin who calmly finished for her sixth goal of the 2011 campaign.
Prior to the game, the team honored several Saint Rose faculty members with sunflowers for the pivotal role they play in the Golden Knights scholar-athlete experience.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose has a key NE-10 road match Wednesday at fourth place Southern Connecticut State. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm in New Haven. Meanwhile, the Ravens return home Wednesday for a 4:00 pm league date with Saint Anselm.
