SAINT ROSE SUFFERS A PAIR OF SETBACKS TO ASSUMPTION

Junior Derek Marshall went 2-for-2 in the finale and had an RBI in the opener against Assumption today.
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose closed out its 2009 campaign with a pair of losses to visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Assumption College today at Bleecker Stadium. The visiting Greyhounds (30-17-1/20-9-1 NE-10) won the first game 5-4 by taking advantage of six Golden Knights errors and then took the second “non-league” contest 6-0.

Sophomore southpaw David Batchelder allowed only one earned on four hits and fanned six over 7.0 innings of work in a no-decision outing. Freshman center fielder Jesse Burba went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the Golden Knights (21-27/14-16 BE-10) offense in the opener.

For Assumption, junior right-hander Tim Dupuis came out of the bullpen and tossed 2.1 innings of no-hit ball to run his record to 4-1 on the season.

The Greyhounds scored an unearned run in the ninth to secure the victory, after they had rallied from a 4-2 deficit with a pair of runs in the eighth. Sophomore shortstop Shawn Frigon reached on a error, advanced to second on a failed pick off attempt, went to third on a wild pitch; and finally came across with the winning run on a sacrifice fly by junior center fielder Derek Migrants.

Senior third baseman Mike DiReda drew a bases loaded walk and sophomore left fielder Josh Dufrensne stroked a sacrifice fly to left to account for the two Greyhound runs in the eighth.

In the third, senior second baseman Mike Baillargeon had an RBI base hit and Dufrensne later scored on a fielder's choice in the fifth to put Assumption up 2-0.

Saint Rose finally broke through by sending 10 batters to the plate in a four-run seventh. Senior first baseman Paul Partridge and freshman second baseman Michael Carbone both scored on fielder's choices, junior right fielder Jake Perez had an RBI base hit, and junior left fielder Derek Marshall was hit with the bases loaded to account for the four runs.

However, Dupuis retired the final six batters in order to allow Assumption to improve its record to 10-0 in one run games on the year.

In the nightcap, the Greyhounds broke open a 1-0 ballgame with four runs in the seventh and another in the eighth. DiReda had a two-run double to highlight the decisive seventh.

Marshall finished 2-for-2 while junior right-hander Nate Ward allowed a run and recorded five strikeouts throughout 6.0 innings of work to lead the Golden Knights. DiReda went 4-for-4 and Baillargeon wound up 3-or-4 with two RBI to pace Assumption.
