WORCESTER, MA – The College of Saint Rose received a superlative pitching performance from senior right-hander
Jeremiah St. Louis to take the opener 3-1, but host Assumption scored five runs in the sixth to capture the nightcap 8-2 in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader today.
The fourth all-time strikeout leader in school annals (270), St. Louis whiffed a career-high 15 batters and walked only one while scattering seven hits over the distance. He has now allowed just four runs throughout his last three starts that cover 20.0 innings of work.
Freshman second baseman
Michael Carbone went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Golden Knights (21-25/14-15 NE-10) offense. Junior right-fielder
Jake Perez and junior left fielder
Derek Marshall had two hits apiece, while sophomore shortstop
Ryan Burke doubled and stole a base to help the Saint Rose cause.
Sophomore catcher Mike Foley and junior first baseman Tim Scafidi had two hits apiece to lead the Greyhounds (28-17-1/19-9-1 NE-10), who entered the afternoon riding a five-game win streak.
The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Marshall smacked a two-out base hit to center field that scored Carbone, who had reached on a leadoff single. Saint Rose added a run in the fifth via an RBI base hit by sophomore center fielder
Garret Keenan and then made it 3-0 an inning later behind Burke's double that brought across Perez.
Assumption got one back in the home half of the sixth, but St. Louis responded by setting down seven straight. He then worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth after Assumption came up with two infield hits and put another on courtesy of a Saint Rose error. However, St. Louis dug in and fanned the final Greyhound batter to end the ballgame.
In the nightcap, Assumption broke open a 2-2 affair with its five-run sixth inning that preceded another run in the seventh. Carbone, Marshall and senior first baseman
Paul Partridge had two hits apiece to lead Saint Rose. Scafidi provided the catalyst for the Assumption sixth with a leadoff home run, while junior center fielder Derek Migrants did most of the damage behind a two-run double.
Meanwhile, junior right-hander Dustin Wirzburger and sophomore right-hander Dave McLean came out of the bullpen and tossed 3.0 innings of no-hit ball collectively to help quiet the Golden Knights bats.
The two teams are scheduled to close out their four-game weekend series with a noon twin-bill at Bleecker Stadium tomorrow. The date will conclude the regular-season schedule for both squads as well.
