UMASS LOWELL TAKES TWO FROM SAINT ROSE

Junior center fielder Ryan Price was a combined 5-for-7 in today's doubleheader
LOWELL, MA – The College of Saint Rose baseball team stranded 16 runners this afternoon as host UMass Lowell swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader behind 10-1 and 4-3 victories. The Golden Knights (14-22/9-12 NE-10) have now dropped three straight after winning five of their previous seven.

In the opener, Saint Rose grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth when senior first baseman Paul Partridge singled through the left side to plate junior right fielder Jake Perez, who walked, stole second and advanced to third on wild pitch.

The River Hawks (20-11/12-7 NE-10) responded with all 10 runs throughout the next five innings, including three in the fifth highlighted by a two-run double from sophomore designated hitter Sean Burns. UMass Lowell then broke things wide open with four runs in the seventh to take a comfortable 9-1 edge.

Freshman southpaw Nick Leathersich went the distance for the River Hawks, fanning eight and walking three while surrendering one earned run along the way. Burns wound up 5-for-5 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.

Saint Rose junior center fielder Ryan Price finished 3-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases, while Partridge and sophomore left fielder Garret Keenan each went 2-for-4 to lead the Golden Knights.

In game two, Saint Rose clawed back from a 4-1 deficit with two runs in the ninth and the tying run on second base. Price then belted a single to left field, but freshman John Kelly was thrown out at the plate to end the game, thus preserving the 4-3 triumph for UMass Lowell.

Senior right-hander Nick DeMidio tossed 8.0 innings on the hump for the Golden Knights, fanning seven and surrendering two walks in the game. Price wound up 2-for-3 with a walk, freshman second baseman Michael Carbone went 2-for-5 with a run and RBI single and Marshall added a pair of singles to lead the offense.

Junior right-hander Matt Monico proved to be effective for the River Hawks. Monico went eight strong innings, scattering six hits and yielding two runs (both unearned).

Saint Rose and UMass Lowell are scheduled to meet again tomorrow in the finale of a three-game set. Game-time is set for 1:00 pm at Bleecker Stadium in Albany.
