ALBANY – With many fresh faces, The College of Saint Rose softball looks toward a successful spring.
Head Coach
Abby Arceneaux has ten additions: junior infielder
Shannon Moore, junior right-hander
Kylee Warner, freshman right-hander
Samantha Allen, freshmen catchers
Katie Drogo and
Reilly Koch, freshman utility
Taylor Matlock, freshman infielder
Morgan Tyrrell, and freshmen outfielders
Samantha Weiss,
Gavriella Rutigliano and
Meg Maloney, to this year's squad.
"Our newcomers are expected to make a heavy impact this season," said Arceneaux. "Some should immediately fill key starting roles for us."
The ten join an experienced core looking to earn a Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament berth.
"We are hoping with our returnees' drive and our new additions that this is the year we break through," said Arceneaux.
With the multiple new players donning the Black and Gold, Arceneaux will lean on her senior class: infielders
Briana Bowen and Beth Jones and outfielders
Samantha LaBarbera,
Erin Maloney, and
Astasia Myler, this season. Bowen and Maloney will captain this year's squad.
Bowen, played in all 39 games at first base and hit .296 with 16 RBI. She led the team with 36 runs scored and stroked a team-best nine doubles. Myler, a middle of the order regular, batted .306 with 17 RBI and 25 runs scored. Jones, LaBarbara and Maloney will be counted on to provide great team at-bats, strong defense, and be counted on to provide guidance on the incoming freshman crop.
Sophomore shortstop
Ryane Brush headlines the group of returnees. The second-team All-NE10 selection led the Golden Knights in average (.325), home runs (six), runs batted in (28), and slugging (.558). Brush, who also earned NE10 All-Rookie honors, registered three six-game hitting streaks during her rookie season.
The infielder is part of a sophomore core that gained valuable experience in 2018. Outfielder
Alissa Folts and infielder
Savanna Liverio also started more than 20 games as freshmen and should continue to ascend. Sophomore catcher
Liz D'Agostino received time at catcher, while sophomore right-hander
Emily Kurtzner topped the Golden Knights with six victories last spring.
"Groomed by last year's graduating class, the sophomore class will be expected to show leadership around the diamond," said Arceneaux.
Saint Rose, picked to place sixth in the NE10 Southwest Division in the preseason coaches poll, begins the season on Thursday, February 28 at THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. NE10 play is scheduled to open on Wednesday, March 20, when Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne visits Cathy Haker Field, located at the Plumeri Sports Complex, for an afternoon doubleheader.
