Box Score
ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose had a 2-0 first inning lead go for naught as American International scored two runs on a bizarre bases loaded double in the third and then took advantage of three errors in the seventh to upend the Golden Knights 5-2 in
Northeast-10 Conference action this afternoon at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Saint Rose also hurt itself by stranding 11 runners.
Sophomore designated hitter
Chad Adams went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while sophomore center fielder
Derek Reed finished 2-for-5 with a run scored to lead the Golden Knights (9-16/5-3 NE-10) attack. Also, junior left fielder
Nick Venier had a base hit in the first to run his hit streak to 20 games.
In the opening frame, junior first baseman
Zac Bellinger drove in his team-leading 16th run of the year with a sacrifice fly and Adams brought home Venier with an infield single to afford Saint Rose an early cushion.
American International subsequently tied it when junior right fielder David Kerlejza lofted a fly ball that got caught in the wind gust and sailed just beyond the right side of the infield, before falling in for a two-run double. The Yellow Jackets then scored three more runs on three hits and a pair of errors in the seventh.
Saint Rose conversely put at least one runner in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings; but could not place a crooked digit on the left field scoreboard.
Sophomore shortstop Eddie Ritch and senior catcher Dan Fenton had two hits apiece out of the top-two spots of the order for the Yellow Jackets (8-17/3-12 NE-10). Sophomore right-hander Jeff Kraucunas tossed 2.1 innings of two-hit, shutout ball to pick up the win in relief, while freshman righty Kevin Wnukowski worked a one-two-three ninth en route to his first collegiate save.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are home this weekend with a key intra-division three-game series versus Adelphi. Both Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's finale get rolling at 12:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets have a three-game home set with Southern Connecticut State.
