ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to upend
Upstate Challenge and
Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne 5-4 in the finale of a doubleheader today at
Cathy Cummings Haker Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Dolphins took the opener 6-1 by scoring at least a run in each of the final four frames.
Senior first baseman
Olivia Reeves, senior center fielder
Amber Loussedes and senior designated player
Zoe Dubois each went 2-for-3 to lead the Golden Knights (6-9/2-2 NE-10) game-two charge.
Meanwhile, freshman right-hander
Renee Vaiano scattered seven hits and fanned eight throughout the distance to capture her first collegiate victory.
Saint Rose got off to a quick start. Sophomore shortstop
Danielle Brusca, Reeves, and Wood each doubled; and junior left fielder
Kari Bird added a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0 Golden Knights after one.
The Dolphins got one back in the third and went up 4-3 in the fourth via an error, a passed ball, and an RBI double off the bat of senior designated player Vanessa Utley.
However, Reeves tied it in the fifth with her third home run within two days, a solo shot that cleared the scoreboard in left-center.
The Golden Knights then went ahead for good in the sixth when junior catcher
Alexis Williams belted a leadoff double to left. Senior left fielder
Val Nelson then sacrificed sophomore pinch-runner
Meghan Reynolds to third who scored on a Loussedes single after initially being caught in a run down. However, she was able to beat the throw home when Le Moyne tried to cut down Loussedes who hustled into the second.
Vaiano then retired Le Moyne in order in the seventh.
Looking ahead, both squads have NE-10 crossover doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday. Each school will visit Bentley and Stonehill on subsequent days.
