SAINT ROSE DROPS SERIES FINALE TO ADELPHI

Junior catcher Lukas Nethaway went 2-for-3 with a solo home run for the Golden Knights today.
Box Score

ALBANY–Adelphi overcame an early 3-0 deficit and then held off a charge by The College of Saint Rose to take the finale of a three-game Northeast-10 Conference weekend series 8-7 earlier today at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Panthers (15-14/10-7 NE-10) thus avoided a series sweep by recording 18 hits.

Junior first baseman Zac Bellinger went 3-for-4 while junior catcher Lukas Nethaway and junior designated hitter Nick Venier had two hits apiece. Nethaway also homered while Venier ran his hit streak to 23 games.

The Golden Knights (11-17/7-4 NE-10) took a 3-0 lead after two as senior right fielder Scott Hladik had an RBI groundout in the first. Nethaway then belted a solo shot over the left field fence and freshman shortstop Mike Flynn stroked an RBI double to left in the second. Adelphi subsequently scored three times in the third to tie it; before Saint Rose went back up, 4-3, on a bases loaded infield hit by junior second baseman Ryan Hooker in the bottom half.

However, the Panthers scored two in both the fourth and fifth and another in the seventh to take an 8-6 lead after the Golden Knights pushed across a pair in the sixth when Venier and Bellinger belted RBI singles. They then made it a one run game in the seventh when sophomore center fielder Derek Reed drove in Nethaway on a two-out base hit.

In the ninth, Saint Rose brought the go-ahead run to the plate. However, senior right-hander John Donnelly worked around a one out walk to collect his fourth save of the year for Adelphi.

Senior third baseman Richard Mejia went 4-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs, while junior center fielder Cliff Brantley, junior right fielder Nick Zito, and junior second baseman Vincent Sharkey had three hits apiece to help the Panthers cause.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a 3:00 pm NE-10 game Tuesday at Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne. Meanwhile, Adelphi has a 3:30 pm home date with conference rival Pace University that same afternoon.
