ALBANY–The College of Saint Rose made a statement by taking both ends of today's key intra-division
Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from visiting Adelphi University at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights won the opener in the ninth inning 2-1 and then pounded out a season-high 16 hits to take the finale 10-6.
Sophomore center fielder
Derek Reed smashed three doubles and a triple, sophomore left fielder
Chad Adams drove in three runs, and junior first baseman
Zac Bellinger went 3-for-5 to lead the game-two attack. Also, senior designated hitter
Brian Maynard and senior right fielder
Scott Hladik both had a pair of hits and two RBI. Furthermore, junior DH
Nick Venier ran his hit streak to 22 games with a single in his lone at bat.
After getting out a 2-0 lead in the first, Adelphi (14-14/9-7 NE-10) tied it by scoring twice in the second. However, Saint Rose made it 6-2 in the third and 7-2 in the seventh, before the Panthers pulled to within a run by scoring four times in the eighth. The Golden Knights (1-16/7-3 NE-10) answered right back though with three runs in their half of the eighth to account for the final score.
Back-to-back doubles by Reed and Maynard, an RBI base hit by Hladik and a two run triple to deep center by Adams highlighted the third. Reed tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, before a leadoff double from freshman third baseman
Tyler Ungerland, a Maynard RBI single and a Hladik run scoring two-base hit keyed the eighth.
Senior right-hander
Ryan Harper allowed two runs on seven hits throughout 7.0 innings of work, while sophomore left-hander
Joe Pokrentowski came on in the eighth and struck out three consecutive batters with the tying run standing on third.
Meanwhile, junior right fielder Nick Zito and junior left fielder Donato Signore had two hits each, while freshman Eric Hassell had a three run, pinch hit double in the eighth for the Adelphi.
In the opener, freshman shortstop
Mike Flynn drove in the winning run with a bases loaded single on a drawn in infield after the Panthers pushed one across to tie it in the top half. Bellinger smacked an RBI double down the right field line in the third that scored Reed and made it 1-0 Golden Knights.
Sophomore right-hander
Coby Schwartz tossed 7.1 innings of five-hit ball in a no-decision outing. Meanwhile, Adelphi sophomore right-hander Jonathan Mulford allowed a run on three hits in 7.0 innings of work.
Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 12:00 pm at Bellizzi Field.
