WINTER PARK, FL–The College of Saint Rose split its final two games at the
66th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week today. Four pitchers manufactured a combined shutout in a 2-0 win versus University of the Sciences (1-9), before the host Tars scored the winning run on an infield single to defeat the Golden Knights 8-7 in the finale.
Sophomore right-hander
Coby Schwartz improved to 2-0 on the year by scattering six hits and fanning nine while issuing only one walk throughout 7.0 innings of work in the opener. Sophomore southpaws
Anthony Romito and
Joe Pokrentowski, and sophomore right-hander
Phillip Zdanowski allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
Three underclassmen stood out offensively as well. Sophomore center fielder
Derek Reed belted an RBI base hit that scored freshman right fielder
Alex Chandler for what proved to be the winning run in the second. Chandler then brought around freshman left fielder
Louis Ferrari with a base hit after the latter stroked a leadoff double down the right field line in the fourth.
Sophomore third baseman
Chad Adams also doubled to help pace the Saint Rose (4-10) attack.
In the finale, the Golden Knights rebounded from a 3-0, first inning deficit by scoring six times in the second. Rollins (10-8) then got two back in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie it 6-6. Both squads added a run in the eighth, before freshman first baseman Michael Dolan pushed across the game-winner on a bases loaded single back to the pitcher with two down.
Junior second baseman
Ryan Hooker roped a grand slam over the left field fence and Adams smacked a two-run single to right to account for the Saint Rose six-run, fourth. Reed finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base while junior first baseman
Zac Bellinger went 2-for-4 as both players recorded their team-leading fifth multi-hit contests of the year. Also, junior left fielder
Nick Venier doubled in the fourth to run his hit streak to nine games.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose concludes its week-long stay in the Sunshine State tomorrow with a 2:30 pm game versus Molloy in Boca Raton. Meanwhile, the Devils have a 3:15 pm date at Villanova this Tuesday, March 11; while Rollins will entertain Stonehill on Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
