FIVE RUN SIXTH, RELIEF PITCHING PROPEL GOLDEN KNIGHTS

Senior right fielder Scott Hladik ignited a five-run, sixth for the Golden Knights today.
Box Score

WEST HAVEN, NY–The College of Saint Rose scored all five of its runs in the sixth inning and then used a pair of strong relief pitching efforts to upend host New Haven 5-3 in its 2014 Northeast-10 Conference opener today.

Senior right fielder Scott Hladik and junior second baseman Ryan Hooker had two hits apiece, while junior first baseman Zac Bellinger and junior left fielder Nick Venier had one hit each to extend their on-base streaks to 13 games.

On the mound, junior left-hander Bryan Carr and junior right-hander Chris Gould collectively fanned three without issuing a walk throughout 3.0 innings of no-hit ball out of the bullpen. Sophomore right-hander Coby Schwartz improved to 3-1 on the year. Schwartz allowed two runs on four hits and struck out four in 5.2 innings of work.

After the Chargers (4-5/2-4 NE-10) scored a pair in the fourth, Saint Rose put itself in the driver's seat in the sixth. Hladik doubled to right to put two runners in scoring position and then Bellinger brought across Venier with a sacrifice fly. Sophomore designated hitter Chad Adams drove in Hladik with a single up the middle. A base hit by sophomore catcher Patrick Griffin and a Hooker RBI single coupled with a New Haven error resulted in three more runs.

Carr and Gould then faced the minimum nine batters throughout the final three frames after New Haven scored an unearned run with no outs in the seventh.

Junior left fielder Kyle Cullen went 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored, while junior center fielder Brendan O'Reilly reached base three times with a single and a pair of walks to lead the Chargers.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose is currently scheduled to play its 2014 home opener this Tuesday, April 1 versus conference and Upstate Challenge rival Le Moyne. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm at Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Chargers are also home that day with a 3:30 pm meeting with crosstown NE-10 foe Southern Connecticut State.
