Box Score
SUTHERLAND, VA–Kutztown scored four runs throughout the last four innings and escaped a jam in the ninth to upend The College of Saint Rose 5-4 in the series finale today at the Dinwiddie Sports Complex.
The Golden Knights (4-13) bounced back from a 1-0 first inning deficit by scoring once in the second and two more times in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. However, the Bears (7-1) got one back in the sixth, went ahead to stay behind a pair in the seventh and then tacked on another in the eighth to go up 5-3.
Saint Rose did not go quietly though. Junior designated hitter
Nick Venier belted a leadoff blast over the right field fence in the eighth to get the Golden Knights to within a run. They then had runners at the corners with one down in the ninth, but Kutztown sophomore right-hander Matt Swarmer induced a pair of fly outs to collect his second save in as many days.
Venier's round-tripper extended his hit streak to 12 games. Also, junior second baseman
Ryan Hooker finished 2-for-4 while senior right-hander
Ryan Harper allowed only one earned run on five hits throughout 6.2 innings of work in a tough-luck loss.
For Kutztown, junior center fielder Brandon Martinez went 4-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is tentatively scheduled to open the
Northeast-10 Conference portion of its 2014 slate with a pair of 12:00 pm home doubleheaders next weekend. Saint Michael's is set to visit Saturday, March 22 while Saint Anselm is on Sunday's docket. As for the Bears, they have a 3:00 pm date at Barton College in Wilson, NC on Tuesday.
