Dinwiddie, VA – The College of Saint Rose had both Wilmington and West Chester in trouble before a big inning in each game led to respective 6-4 and 11-5 setbacks against a pair of perennial NCAA Tournament participants on Sunday. The Golden Knights (0-6) were up 3-1 heading into the home half of the seventh against the Wildcats and owned a 3-2 lead in the fourth versus West Chester.
Senior designated hitter
Brian Maynard belted three home runs, including a two run blast and a pair of solo shots; while sophomore center fielder
Derek Reed went 3-for-4 against Wilmington. Also, sophomore left-hander
Coby Schwartz threw 4.2 innings of three-hit, shutout ball. Maynard's effort represents the first three home run game by a Saint Rose player since David Benyo pulled off the feat in a 13-10 victory against American International on May 6, 2001.
Later in the day, junior first baseman
Zac Bellinger went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double, while junior left fielder
Nick Venier stroked a three-run home run in the fourth against West Chester. On the mound, senior right-hander
Ryan Harper allowed only two runs on a pair of hits and fanned four throughout 3.0 innings in his first piece of action in nearly two years.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose opens its annual spring trek through Florida next Saturday, March 1. The Golden Knights will meet both Saint Anselm and Rollins that day.
