2014-15 MEN'S BASKETBALL PREVIEW

INTRODUCTION: Head coach Brian Beaury, who enters his 29th year at the helm, has brought in his largest recruiting class ever and thus there are many questions surrounding The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team as the 2014-15 campaign gets underway. The Golden Knights are coming off a 13-14 season that included a fourth place, 10-10 finish in Southwest Division of the Northeast-10 Conference. Only five letterwinners are back from that team. Meanwhile, ten freshmen dot this year's roster that does not include a senior.

LETTERWINNERS LOST (8): Four starters are among the eight missing letterwinners from last season. The quartet includes guards Dan Mundweiler and Kareem Thomas, forward James Wilson, who is now a member of Beaury's staff, and All-America center Dominykas Milka. The latter averaged a school record 20.7 points to go along with 12.4 rebounds per-game a year ago.

LETTERWINNERS RETURNING (5): Junior forwards Tyler Sayre and Chris Dorgler, junior guard Max Weaver, and sophomore guards Brodie Munson and Mical-Ryan Boyd comprise the veteran group. Sayre, who suffered a non-basketball related injury this past summer, and Boyd are not expected to dress this season. Sayre averaged 18.2 points and 5.9 rebounds as a third-team All-Conference pick. Dorgler averaged 5.2 points and made 11 starts, while Weaver and Munson saw limited duty.

NEWCOMERS (10): Freshman forward Jalaun Taylor, who sat out last year, is expected to contribute right away as are freshman guard Maksis Uskans and freshman forward Jack Jones. Two more freshmen guards in Pharroh Gordon and Jamaal Greenwood could also be in the mix along with freshman forward Julian Lipinski.

Taylor, who was with the team, but did not dress in 2013-14, helped lead nearby Bishop Maginn to a 2007 state finals appearance. Uskans was the top scorer in the European Youth Basketball League (EYBL) a year ago, and Jones was part of an Australian Division 1 national championship squad in both 2012 and 2013. Gordon led his English club national team to four consecutive championships from 2011 to 2014, and Greenwood was a two-time, first-team Interstate Athletic Conference All-League selection at The Bullis School in Maryland. Lipinski, another Australian, led Whitefriars to an Associated Catholic Colleges championship and was subsequently named the league Most Valuable Player.

Freshman forward Anthony Russell was also with the squad a year ago although like Taylor he did not dress. He was two-time All-Region honoree at Bridgeton Academy in Maine.

The remainder of the group is comprised of freshman guard Jordan Martin, freshman forward Matt Cerutti, and freshman center Sam Eckstrom. Martin is an intelligent point guard who was Baltimore Catholic League All-Star at the John Carroll School and Cerutti starred at nearby Guilderland. Eckstrom closed out his career as the third all-time leading scorer and all-time leading rebounder at Olean with 1,536 career points and 790 rebounds.

SCHEDULE: The Golden Knights will open their season by hosting the fifth annual Northeast-10 Challenge that is presented by the Hilton Garden Inn-Albany Medical Center. They will meet Wilmington on Saturday, November 15 at 7:00 pm and then face Bloomfield the following day at 5:00 pm.

The remainder of the non-conference schedule includes appearances at the IRMC/Urgicare Classic at Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Saturday and Sunday, November 29 and 30; and the Philadelphia University Holiday Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, December 20 and 21.

Saint Rose will furthermore encounter 20 NE-10 games with home and home Southwest Division series versus Pace, Le Moyne, Adelphi, Southern Connecticut State, New Haven and American International. The Golden Knights will also host conference rivals Saint Anselm, Franklin Pierce, Merrimack, and Bentley. They will travel to Assumption, Southern New Hampshire, Saint Michael's and Stonehill.

SUMMATION: Again, this is by far the youngest team that has ever taken the floor throughout Brian Beaury's tenure. However, there is talent in the mix and so it will be interesting to see how it all shakes out throughout the season. The Golden Knights have been picked to finish third in the Southwest Division of the NE-10, so nobody will be taking them lightly.
