NORTH ANDOVER, MA-The College of Saint Rose rallied from a nine point deficit in the final six minutes and scored at least 80 points for the seventh time this year en route to an 82-78 win at
Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack tonight. The Golden Knights (9-7/6-4 NE-10) shot 52.9 percent (18-for-34) from the floor and held the Warriors to 37.9 percent shooting (11-for-29) in the second half.
Senior center
Dominykas Milka went 12-for-16 from the field on the way to his 12th "double-double" of the year for Saint Rose. Milka finished with 25 points and 16 rebounds along with five assists. Senior guard
Kareem Thomas and sophomore forward
Tyler Sayre tossed in 13 points apiece, while sophomore guard
Chris Dorgler came off the bench to score nine of his 11 points throughout the second period. Senior guard
Dan Mundweiler finished with eight points and a game-high six assists.
The game went back and forth with 13 ties and nine lead changes although Saint Rose appeared to be in trouble down nine, 69-60, after Merrimack sophomore guard Anthony Barry drained a pair of free throws with 5:56 showing on the clock.
However, the Golden Knights scored 10 of the game's next 11 points as Sayre hit four free throws during two trips to the line and knocked down a jumper off a Thomas steal, before Milka and Thomas both scored from the perimeter to tie it, 70-70, with 3:31 remaining.
The Warriors (7-8/5-5 NE-10) twice went back up by four throughout the next minute before Dorgler nailed a jumper and Sayre scored inside to afford the contest its final deadlock, 76-76, with 52 seconds left. Sophomore guard Gelvis Solano then went 1-for-2 at the foul line. Milka answered with a layup at the other end to make it 78-77 Saint Rose with 40 seconds remaining and after Solano missed a jumper, Mundweiler and Sayre both hit a pair from the stripe to wrap up the victory.
Solano, the leading scorer in the NE-10, wound up with a game-high 28 points and five steals; while Barry finished with 21 in 24 minutes off the bench for Merrimack. Sophomore guard Troy Hammel contributed 15 points and six rebounds.
Looking ahead, both squads are back in action with conference dates this Saturday. The Golden Knights will host Southern New Hampshire at 3:30 pm in the second half of an NE-10 twin bill. It is "Welcome Back Students Day" along with Sports Bingo presented by
Paesan's Pizza and Restaurant. The first 200 students in attendance for the league doubleheader receive a free slice of pizza. Meanwhile, the Warriors have a 2:00 pm date at Le Moyne in Syracuse.
