EASTON, MA –The College of Saint Rose used some small ball to gain a split with host Stonehill in a
Northeast-10 Conference crossover doubleheader earlier today. The Golden Knights won the opener 7-6 in 10 innings and dropped the nightcap 6-4.
After allowing the Skyhawks (17-12/5-5 NE-10) to rally from a 6-3 deficit in the ninth inning of the first game, the Golden Knights manufactured the winning run in the 10th on a pair of bunts.
Sophomore right fielder
Lukas Nethaway smacked a leadoff single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman third baseman
Chad Adams and went to third on a base hit by freshman center fielder
Derek Reed. Senior first baseman
A.J. Capone followed with a bunt single that scored Nethaway with the game-winner.
Junior right-hander
Adam DeFruscio then retired Stonehill in order to chalk up his first win in a Saint Rose uniform.
Senior second baseman
Kyle Charron and Reed both finished 3-for-5 while senior designated
Caleb Gleason wound up 2-for-5 with a run scored as Saint Rose tied its season-high with 14 hits. Junior left fielder
Scott Hladik reached base three times with a single and two walks while freshman catcher
Corey Burrows put the Golden Knights up 6-2 with a two-run base hit in the eighth.
Junior right fielder Billy Karalis, freshman designated hitter Chris Hoyt, sophomore left fielder Eric Schneider, and junior first baseman Anthony Pagano all had two hits for the Skyhawks.
In the second game, Stonehill snapped a 4-4 tie with two runs in the eighth. Karalas belted a two-out RBI triple and then came around to score on a base hit by Schneider.
Saint Rose previously tied it 4-4 in the fifth after junior shortstop
Joseph Carcone stroked a leadoff double and scored two batters later via a Charron groundout.
Hladik went 2-for-4 with a two RBI base hit that highlighted a three-run third for the Golden Knights (5-26/2-10 NE-10). Meanwhile, freshman left-hander
Joe Pokrentowski allowed two runs on four hits throughout 5.0 innings of relief.
Karalis and junior third baseman Dan Fratus had two hits apiece for the Skyhawks.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back on the road Wednesday with a 3:30 pm conference date at Southwest Division rival Assumption in Worcester, MA. Meanwhile, the Skyhawks will host Northeast Division foe Bentley that afternoon at 3:30 pm as well.
