GARDEN CITY, NY – The College of Saint Rose gained a split by rallying from a 6-1 deficit with four runs in the sixth and four more in the ninth to take the nightcap of a
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader 11-6 today at Adelphi University. The Panthers previously won the opener 3-2 after the Golden Knights put the potential tying run at third in the ninth.
Junior shortstop
Joseph Carcone went 2-for-5 and drove in three runs and senior left fielder
Caleb Gleason wound up 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI in the finale. Also, freshman left-hander
Joe Pokrentowski scattered five hits and whiffed seven, without issuing a walk, throughout 5.0 innings of relief to pick up the win for the Golden Knights (10-34/7-17 NE-10), who have now won four of their last five.
Junior designated hitter
Scott Hladik, sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger and freshman third baseman
Chad Adams finished with two hits apiece to help the cause.
It was a 6-3 ballgame when senior catcher
A.J. Capone drove a 1-2 pitch down the left field line for a double that scored two runs, before Hladik and Adams followed with RBI base hits in the sixth. In the ninth, Saint Rose did all of its damage with two down as an Adelphi (20-21-1/10-14 NE-10) error coupled with RBI singles by Carcone and Gleason and a run scoring double inside the right field line by senior second by
Kyle Charron closed out the scoring.
Senior first baseman Anthony Zarrella went 4-for-5 and junior center fielder John Campbell drove in four runs to lead the Panthers.
In the opener, Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first before Saint Rose tied it with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth. The Panthers then pushed across the game-winner in the sixth when junior catcher Kevin Hutzel scored from third on a groundout double play.
Sophomore left-hander
Bryan Carr allowed just one earned run and fanned three over the distance in a tough-luck loss. Meanwhile, Bellinger smacked an RBI double in the fourth that scored Hladik. Gleason then doubled down the left field line in the fifth that brought across Capone with the tying run.
Zarella and Campbell had two hits each, while left-hander Chris Pabisch, a graduate student, scattered six hits and recorded five strikeouts during 7.0 inning of work to pick up the win for the Panthers. Senior right-hander Dillon McNamara then tossed 2.0 innings of hitless ball for his league-leading 12th save.
Up next, these two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
