ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose received a couple of stellar pitching performances and used some timely hitting to complete a sweep of
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Assumption tonight at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Golden Knights won the opener 13-0 and took the nightcap 5-1.
Sophomore right-hander
Chris Gould scattered seven hits and struck out five, without issuing a walk, over the distance to pick up the first game win. He also retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. Senior right-hander
Kyle Charron then allowed just a run on five hits to go with seven strikeouts throughout 8.2 innings of work in the finale.
Saint Rose got out to an early start in both games. In the opener, the Golden Knights scored once in both the second and third innings and twice in the fourth to go up 4-0. They then busted it open with nine runs in the fifth when they were helped by three Assumption errors. Freshman third baseman
Chad Adams provided the biggest blow with a double to center field that brought across a pair.
Adams finished 3-for-5 with three RBI while senior left fielder
Caleb Gleason went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI to lead the Golden Knights offense. Charron, who played second base in the opener, had a double and a pair of base hits to go with a walk, while senior catcher
A.J. Capone went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
In the second contest, Saint Rose scored all five of its runs in the first inning. That proved to be more than enough for Charron. Assumption got a run in the second, but Charron got a key strikeout to minimize the damage after the Greyhounds (13-25/9-14 NE-10) loaded the bases.
He was then pretty much in control until the ninth when Assumption jammed the bases again. Charron thus handed the ball over to junior right-hander
Adam DeFruscio who retired the game's final batter for his first save in a Golden Knights (9-33/6-16 NE-10) uniform.
Capone did most of the damage for Saint Rose in the first with a three-run double to the gap in left-center. An RBI base hit by junior right fielder
Scott Hladik and a bases loaded walk accounted for the other two scores.
Sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger finished 2-for-3 with a triple, while Charron and Gleason also had two hits apiece. In the process, Gleason extended his current hit streak to seven games.
Meanwhile, junior centerfielder Bret Clark wound up 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Greyhounds.
Up next, Saint Rose has a three-game series at Adelphi University on Long Island this weekend. The two squads will play a pair on Saturday and then wrap-up the series Sunday. Meanwhile, the Greyhounds have a 3:00 pm neutral site date versus Rollins College tomorrow. The contest is scheduled to be played at Bentley University in Waltham, MA.
