The Plot: The College of Saint Rose comes into today trying to avoid a weekend sweep at the hands of Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival New Haven.
Last Time Out: A furious rally by Saint Rose fell short in a wild opening game and a late surge by New Haven allowed the host Chargers to sweep yesterday's Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader. New Haven won the opener 18-14 after the two squads pounded out 39 hits collectively and then took the finale 8-3.
The Chargers jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first game and led 15-2 entering the bottom of the sixth when the Golden Knights pushed across two runs in the home half, then scored three times in the seventh and seven times in the eighth to get to within 16-14. However, New Haven tacked on two more in the ninth and senior right-hander Peter Jay retired Saint Rose in order to end the 3:36 marathon. In the finale, New Haven scored three times in both the eighth and ninth innings to erase a 3-2 deficit.
Scouting Saint Rose: Freshman shortstop/third baseman
Chad Adams and sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger lead the Golden Knights with 11 multi-hit games this year. Saint Rose is now 4-8 in one-run games this spring following Wednesday night's setback at UMass Lowell. Senior second baseman
Kyle Charron has been successful in all nine of his stolen base attempts. Freshman right-hander
Phillip Zdanowski has allowed just four earned runs during his last three outings that cover 17.2 innings of work.
Scouting New Haven: The Chargers have won four straight after dropping their previous six games. They are 9-6 on the road entering today. Jay is second in the NE-10 with 10 saves. He has allowed only two runs, both unearned, and fanned 23 batters while walking just one throughout 18.1 innings of work. Meanwhile, junior outfielder Chris DeMorais stands third among the league leaders with his .383 batting average. The Chargers have stolen 82 bases on the year while their opponents have swiped 39.
Up Next: Saint Rose has a 3:30 pm home doubleheader versus conference division rival Assumption on Wednesday while the Chargers are back on the road that afternoon with a 3:30 pm date at Pace University.
