Box Score
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose was held scoreless throughout the final eight innings after taking a 1-0 lead and thus fell 2-1 in a crisp pitcher's duel that took a mere two hours and one minute to complete at UMass Lowell this evening.
Sophomore right-hander
Chris Gould was the tough-luck loser for the Golden Knights (6-30). Gould allowed only two runs on four hits and fanned six throughout 8.0 innings of work.
Meanwhile, junior right-hander Mike Calzatta allowed a mere run on three hits in 6.0 of innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the year for the River Hawks (21-15). Senior right-hander Mika Sloban then worked two perfect innings before senior right-hander Tyler Toyfair retired Saint Rose in order in the ninth to pick up this second save this spring.
Saint Rose went up 1-0 in the first on an RBI single down the right field line by junior left fielder
Scott Hladik that scored senior third baseman
Kyle Charron who previously belted a base hit to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
The Golden Knights (6-30) had their best chance to add to their tally in the fifth when they loaded the bases via a pair of walks and a hit batsman. However, Calzatta induced a fly out to escape without any harm.
Meanwhile, UMass Lowell tied it in the third when freshman left fielder Joe Consolmagno tripled to the gap in right-center and scored on an RBI groundout by senior designated hitter James Katsiroubas.
The River Hawks then pushed across what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when sophomore center fielder Luke Reynolds led off with a double and came around on an RBI groundout by Consolmagno two batters later.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is set to host
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division rival Le Moyne at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex tomorrow. The 3:30 pm game will also mark the resumption of the year-long
“Upstate Challenge” rivalry series between the two schools. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell is scheduled to host Saint Michael's for an NE-10 Northeast Division twin-bill Saturday at noon.
