WEST HAVEN, CT – Host Southern Connecticut State pushed across the winning run in the 12th inning to take the opener 2-1 and then upended The College of Saint Rose 5-0 in the nightcap of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader today.

After junior right-hander Adam DeFruscio got out of a no out, bases loaded jam in the 11th; the Owls (17-11-1/7-7 NE-10) scored the winning run an inning later with a pair of sacrifices, an intentional walk and a wild pitch.

Freshman shortstop Chad Adams went 3-for-5 with a stolen base and senior third baseman Kyle Charron had an RBI base hit that put the Golden Knights up 1-0 in the sixth inning.

However, the Owls tied it in the seventh when junior catcher T.J Shea belted a leadoff double down the left field line and scored three batters later on a groundout RBI by freshman right fielder Matt Burns.

There were few other blemishes on a pair of solid Saint Rose pitching performances. Sophomore left-hander Bryan Carr gave up one run on seven hits and fanned nine throughout 6.2 innings of work while DeFruscio surrendered a mere run on three hits to go with five strikeouts during 4.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Junior shortstop T.J. Kiernan finished with three hits to pace Southern Connecticut State.

The Golden Knights (5-29/2-13 NE-10) then drew seven walks to go along with four hits, but stranded 10 runners in the nightcap. Meanwhile, the Owls went up 1-0 in the third and then tacked on two runs in both the sixth and seventh frames. Charron went 2-for-3 with a walk to lead the Saint Rose offense. Burns wound up 3-for-4 with a run scored for the Owls.

Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
