Northeast-10 Conference Championship Sunday evening. Junior center
Dominykas Milka finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds to lead Saint Rose. Senior guard
Andre Pope and freshman forward
Tyler Sayre each contributed 14 points. For Assumption, sophomore guard Terrance Bobb-Jones scored a game-high 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists.
Last Meeting: Southern New Hampshire closed out the final seven minutes of the first half on a 21-9 run and outscored Saint Rose 15-4 from the foul line to upend the visiting Golden Knights 71-55 back on Wednesday, January 16. Milka finished with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists, while junior guard
Dan Mundweiler wound up with 11 points thanks in part to 3-for-6 shooting from the arc. Junior guard Mike Stys knocked down five of his eight 3-point attempts on the way to 20 points for Southern New Hampshire. He also dished out five assists; while fellow junior guard C.J. Marriro and freshman forward Rodney Sanders scored 11 each.
The Series: Each team has won 14 games in the series that dates back to the 1995 NCAA Tournament. However, the Penmen have won four of the last six meetings.
Scouting Saint Rose (15-13): Tenth-seed Saint Rose has won three of its last four; and five of its last seven games. Pope has moved into 13th place on the College's all-time scoring list. He has 1,358 points for his career. He is thus one of only five players in school annals to record 1,300 points and 300 assists (388). Milka recorded his 18th “double-double” of the year during Sunday's victory at Assumption. He is the only player among the league's top-five in both scoring (17.5) and rebounding (11.9). He is fourth in the former and is second in rebounding. Milka also owns four of the conference's top-eight single-game rebounding performances. He is furthermore fourth in the country in rebounding average and stands first in “double-doubles” according to the most recent NCAA statistics report. His 332 rebounds this year are the fifth most in school annals. The Golden Knights own a +0.8 turnover margin and are shooting 35.2 percent (70-for-199) from the arc throughout their 15 victories, but stand at +0.1 in TO margin and 27.2 percent (46-for-169) shooting from the arc throughout their 13 setbacks. They are furthermore outscoring their opponents 233-151 from the foul line during their 15 wins, but are being outscored 158-140 from the stripe throughout their 13 losses. Saint Rose has played 13 games this season that have been decided by five or fewer points. The Golden Knights are 7-6 in those contests.
Milka Named an Academic All-American®: Milka has been named to the Capital One Academic All-America® Division II basketball team as selected by the
College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Milka, a second-team pick, is among a select group of just 15 student-athletes, representing Division II institutions from throughout the country that have been bestowed with this prestigious honor.
Milka and Sayre Garner NE-10 All-Conference Honors: Milka was named a first-team NE-10 All-League pick and Sayre was selected to the All-Rookie squad on Thursday. The teams were announced following a vote of the conference's 16 head coaches.
Saint Rose in the NE-10 Championship: The Golden Knights have advanced to the NE-10 Championship in 11 of their 12 years. The lone exception was last season. Saint Rose has now made six semifinal appearances (2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013) and advanced to the 2007 Championship game, which host and second-ranked Bentley won 71-61.
Traveling: The Golden Knights will have logged some 895 miles throughout four states in a seven-day period by the time they return to Albany early Thursday morning. Saint Rose headed out to Long Island last Thursday, then departed there for Worcester, MA on Saturday, before returning home Sunday night. The Golden Knights then hit the road again early Tuesday morning for this evening's contest.
Scouting Southern New Hampshire (17-10): The sixth seed Penmen have won four straight following Sunday's 79-75 overtime triumph at New Haven. They are making their fifth NE-10 semifinal appearance. Stys is averaging a team-leading 12.0 points, while sophomore forward B.J. Cardarelli and freshman forward Rodney Sanders are averaging 11.7 and 11.6 points respectively.
