ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose claimed the final two games of a three-game weekend series by defeating host and
Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divisional rival Pace earlier today, 7-5 and 8-7.
Freshman infielder
Danielle Brusca led the charge for Saint Rose (4-13/2-5 NE-10) with four hits on the day that included two RBI and a run. Sophomore outfielder
Kari Bird tallied three runs in the first game while her sister, sophomore outfielder
Marisa Bird went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in the nightcap. Freshman right-hander
Nicole Wickham earned a save in the first game followed by the second game victory.
For Pace (8-8/3-7 NE-10), sophomore catcher Hanna Wright knocked in four runs on the day that included a home run and a double. Sophomore first baseman Natalie Gellos finished with five hits highlighted by a home run while freshman outfielder Katie Lange added three hits and two RBI.
An initial 1-1 tie headed into the top of the second inning of the first game turned into a 5-1 Saint Rose lead after the Golden Knights pushed four runs across. Back-to-back singles by freshman infielder
Rachel Waselski and junior infielder
Val Nelson led to two runs as a sacrifice bunt on the part of junior outfielder
Amber Loussedes resulted in a Pace error.
Loussesdes came around to score on a single by sophomore outfielder Marisa Bird who was later driven in by Kari Bird, who laced a double to left field and subsequently scored on a Brusca single.
Insurance runs in the fourth and sixth innings allowed the Golden Knights to hold off a Pace rally. The Setters scored once in the third, twice in the fourth, and again once more in the fifth. However, Wickham settled down to preserve the 7-5 victory and pick up the save.
Pace took an early 1-0 lead after scoring a run in the bottom of the first to open the nightcap. Saint Rose quickly responded with three runs in the top of the second. Loussedes singled and advanced to second on a throwing error that resulted in two runs being scored. Marisa Bird followed with an RBI single of her own.
The Golden Knights increased their lead to 5-1 after a two-run third. Saint Rose again took advantage of a Pace error to score the first run and then scored the second on a sacrifice fly by freshman catcher
Zoe Dubois. Pace cut the lead to 5-4 in the bottom half of the inning that was highlighted by a Gellos two run homer.
Pace then tied the game at 7-7 in the bottom of the fifth when Lange knocked in two runs with a single.
However, Saint Rose responded right back with a run in the top of the sixth that proved to be the game-winner. Marisa Bird laid a single in front of the catcher that brought home freshman infielder
Meghan Reynolds, who entered as a pinch runner for Nelson who led off the inning with a single. Sophomore
Anna Carey picked up the save by pitching the final two innings to help preserve the victory for Wickham.
The Golden Knights return home this Tuesday to face NE-10 divisional foe Assumption for a 3:00 pm doubleheader at
Cathy Cummings Haker Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. Pace also plays on Tuesday when the Setters host New Haven for a divisional single game.
