ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose dropped both ends of a doubleheader to open its 2013 Northeast-10 Conference slate against visiting UMass Lowell today at Cathy Cummings Haker Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The River Hawks claimed game one by a 2-0 final before taking the nightcap 3-0.

Pitching dominated game one for both teams as a pair of freshmen controlled the circle. For Lowell (5-13/3-2 NE-10), Marielle Handley picked up the shutout win. Handley allowed four hits and walked one while striking out 11. Nicole Wickham tossed her fourth complete game in as many starts for the Golden Knights (2-10/0-2 NE-10). She surrendered two unearned runs on three hits, striking out five without walking a batter.

The only scoring in the contest came in the top of the third inning when River Hawks freshman rightfielder Brianna Martin reached on an error and subsequently stole second. A flyout to rightfield then moved Martin to third. Sophomore leftfielder Ally Greene grounded a ball to third where it was fielded cleanly, but a low throw to first allowed Greene to reach and Martin to score. Greene stole second and third before sophomore designated player Abby Jamieson doubled into the left-centerfield gap to plate Greene for a 2-0 UMass Lowell lead.

In game two, pitching was once again a key as the two teams combined for nine hits. UMass Lowell tallied the initial run in the first inning when Jamieson lifted a sac fly to score senior second baseman Krista MacKenzie who walked to open the frame, moved to second on a groundout and stole third. The River Hawks then scored single runs in the third and fifth innings, with MacKenzie crossing the plate all three times in the game to create the final margin.

Handley (2-9) also pitched the second game for UMass Lowell and was just as sharp, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out four. Freshman Ashlee Frazier suffered the game-two loss. Wickham came on in relief for Saint Rose and pitched 3.2 innings, surrendering one run. In total for the afternoon, Wickham worked 10.2 innings and allowed one earned run and while fanning seven without with issuing a walk.

Offensively for the Golden Knights, sophomore designated player Marisa Bird had two hits in game one. Freshman shortstop Danielle Brusca recorded a hit in each end of the twin-bill.

Saint Rose returns to Haker Field tomorrow to face conference and "Upstate Challenge" rival Le Moyne for a 3:00 pm twin-bill.  Meanwhile, UMass Lowell remains on the road to face NE-10 foe Merrimack for a 3:00 pm single-game in North Andover, MA.
