RINDGE, NH – The College of Saint Rose concluded a long unscheduled road trip with a pair of setbacks at
Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce today. The Golden Knights dropped the opener 7-1 and fell 12-4 in the nightcap.
The games were originally set to be part of opening weekend at
Bob Bellizzi Field at the Plumeri Sports Complex, but were moved due to the local weather conditions. Saint Rose thus played two games against Southern New Hampshire yesterday in New London, CT and then headed to New Hampshire to take on the Ravens. In all, the Golden Knights traveled more than 400 miles and played four games within two days.
Franklin Pierce (13-9/3-0 NE-10) took advantage in the opener by busting open a 4-0 game with three runs in the ninth. Saint Rose scored its lone run in the bottom half when senior designated hitter
Kyle Charron singled up the middle to bring across junior shortstop
Joseph Carcone. Carcone previously reached on an error, stole second and went to third on a poor throw.
Sophomore left-hander
Bryan Carr allowed four runs and fanned six throughout 8.0 innings of work for the Golden Knights. His counterpart, senior right-hander Ryan Thompson tossed 8.0 innings of two-hit, shutout ball to run his record to 3-0 on the year.
In the finale, the Ravens pushed across a run in three of the first four innings to go up 6-0. The Golden Knights (3-18/0-4 NE-10) cut their deficit in half with three runs in the fifth, but the Ravens scored six more times in the ninth. Saint Rose then added another run in the home half.
Charron smacked a two-run double to the gap in right-center and junior left fielder
Scott Hladik brought home Charron with a sacrifice fly to right in the fifth.
Charron, Carcone and freshman center fielder
Derek Reed had two hits apiece while junior right-hander
Mack Naughton, freshman right-hander
Coby Schwartz and freshman southpaw
Joe Pokrentowski combined to throw 4.0 innings of three hit ball out of the bullpen to pace Saint Rose.
Junior center fielder Calvin Graves went 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot and senior right-hander Matt Horan allowed only a hit and fanned six throughout the final 3.0 innings to pick up his first save of the year for Franklin Pierce.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to play their home opener Thursday with a 12:00 pm non-conference doubleheader versus East Stroudsburg. Meanwhile, the Ravens are scheduled open a three-game NE-10 Northeast Divisional series against visiting UMass Lowell Friday. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm.
