NEW LONDON, CT – A comeback by The College of Saint Rose in the finale came up just short and thus Southern New Hampshire was able to complete the sweep in the
Northeast-10 Conference opener for both clubs today. The games were held at Mitchell College due to weather conditions in Albany. The Penmen (16-3/2-0 NE-10), who are ranked #14 in this week's
National Collegiate Baseball Writers NCAA Division II Poll, took the opener 4-1 and hung on to take the second game 5-4.
The Golden Knights made a furious comeback, but left the tying run on third in the ninth after falling behind 3-0 in the nightcap. They cut their deficit to 3-2 with a run in the sixth and another in the seventh. The two teams each scored once in the eighth and Southern New Hampshire added another one in the ninth to go up 5-4.
Saint Rose drew a pair of leadoff walks and then sacrificed them into scoring position in the home half of the ninth. A sacrifice fly by junior left fielder
Scott Hladik made it 5-4, but Penmen junior right-hander Alex Powers picked up a strikeout to end the ballgame.
Senior third baseman
Kyle Charron went 2-for-4 with a run scored and sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger finished 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Golden Knights. Hladik wound up 3-for-4 to pace Saint Rose in the opener.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are scheduled to play another conference crossover tomorrow with a 2:00 pm doubleheader at Franklin Pierce in Rindge, NH. As for the Penmen, they have a 9:00 am twin-bill set for tomorrow versus NE-10 rival Le Moyne. Those games will precede the Saint Rose contests at Franklin Pierce.
