WEST CHESTER, PA – The College of Saint Rose dropped both of its seven-inning games at defending national champion West Chester this afternoon. The Golden Knights fell 4-3 in the opener after stranding a runner on third base in the second through fifth innings. The host Golden Rams (4-4-1) then put four runs on the board in the first and three more in the second en route to a 9-5 victory in the finale.
Sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger went 2-for-3 and belted his second home run of the year, a solo shot in the fifth, while sophomore southpaw
Bryan Carr tossed 3.0 innings of shutout ball out of the bullpen to lead Saint Rose in the first game.
Junior first baseman Chris Pula lined a two-run homer inside the left field foul pole and added a base hit in the third for West Chester.
The Golden Knights tied the game 2-2 in the second when sophomore second baseman
Ryan Hooker drove in a run with a base hit to right and then came around to score on an error two batters later. West Chester pushed across two more runs in the home half of the frame, before Carr came on to start the third and proceeded to stall the Golden Rams offense.
Saint Rose eventually made it a one run game thanks to Bellinger's homer in the fifth, but the Golden Knights left two on in the inning and West Chester pitching allowed only one batter to reach the rest of the way.
In the finale, senior third baseman
Kyle Charron went 3-for-4 with a run scored to pace Saint Rose. Freshman shortstop
Chad Adams finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI while freshman center fielder
Derek Reed wound up 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI as well.
Junior right-hander
Josh Johnson hurled 2.2 innings of one-hit ball in relief, while freshman left-hander
Joe Pokrentowski entered the game and retired three straight batters to get out of a first and second, no out jam in the fifth.
Senior second baseman Justin Lamborn went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and senior third baseman Jordan Wlodarczyk accounted for most of the damage with a two-run triple in the first to go along with a two-run base hit an inning later.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose is scheduled to play a three-game series at Molloy College this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader is set to get underway at 3:00 pm on Long Island. Meanwhile, West Chester has a 2:00 pm date Friday versus Northwood University (MI) in Davenport, FL.
