FLORENCE, SC – The College of Saint Rose opened its 2013 campaign with an impressive split at Francis Marion (SC) today. The Golden Knights (1-0) took the finale 3-1 after falling 11-7 in the first game to a Patriots (3-3) squad that was ranked #7 in the Collegiate Baseball preseason national poll.
Saint Rose jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap, which proved to be enough for sophomore right-hander
Chris Gould. Gould allowed only an unearned run on four hits throughout 5.2 innings of work to pick up the win. He also fanned three without issuing a walk.
Junior second baseman
Joseph Carcone got things started for the Golden Knights by stroking a leadoff double and stealing third. Senior third baseman
Kyle Charron then scored Carcone with a base hit. Two batters later, sophomore right fielder
Lukas Nethaway brought across Charron with a single.
Carcone finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles while Charron allowed only a base hit after taking the mound in the ninth to pick up the save. Sophomore first baseman
Zac Bellinger, senior catcher A.J. Capone and freshman center fielder
Derek Reed also had base hits.
In the opener, Saint Rose pushed across five runs in the third, but the Patriots scored twice in the home half and then added seven more an inning later.
Capone went 3-for-5 with a three run double while Bellinger finished 2-for-3 with three RBI behind a two-run double and a solo home run. Senior third baseman Stephen Tarkenton finished 3-for-4 with four RBI to lead Francis Marion.
Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 1:00 pm.
