WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose dropped its regular-season finale in heartbreaking fashion with a 60-59 double-overtime setback at
Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven tonight. The game was close with neither team generating more than a six point lead at any point. It also featured 12 ties and a staggering 22 lead changes.
Regardless, the Golden Knights (13-13/10-12 NE-10) had a chance to win it in the final nine seconds. Junior guard
Dan Mundweiler drove right, but had his layup blocked out of bounds. An ensuing 15-foot jumper from the right wing by freshman forward
Tyler Sayre bounced off the front rim to allow the Chargers (19-7/16-6 NE-10) to hang on.
Junior center
Dominykas Milka recorded his 17th “double-double” of the year with 19 points and 15 rebounds to pace Saint Rose. Senior guard
Andre Pope finished with 13 points while Sayre and junior guard
Kareem Thomas had 10 each.
Sophomore forward Eric Anderson had a “double-double” of his own for New Haven, which ran its win streak to six games and improved to 12-2 at home on the year. Anderson wound up with 12 points and 18 boards, while junior guards Jeffrey Adkins and Cyrus James finished with 13 and 12 points respectively.
Thomas forced overtime by draining a 10-foot jumper from the left side of the lane, but after senior guard Jeremy Williams went 1-for-2 from the stripe with 18 seconds left in the first overtime period, the Golden Knights turned the ball over to bring about an extra five minutes.
A Mundweiler 3-pointer from the top of the key put Saint Rose up 52-51 with 2:18 left in the second OT period. That proved to be the game's final field goal as neither team could score throughout the next 2:41.
New Haven junior guard Ashanti DePass was eventually fouled with nine ticks left while pulling down an offensive rebound from a missed Williams 3-pointer. His subsequent two free throws proved to be the difference.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will visit Adelphi in an NE-10 Championship first-round game this Friday, March 1, at 7:30 pm on Long Island. The winner will then head to Assumption for a quarterfinal encounter on Sunday, March 3, at 4:00 pm in Worcester, MA. As for the Chargers, they have drawn a first-round bye and will host Southern New Hampshire in another quarterfinal contest on Sunday. That game is set to get underway at 3:00 pm.
