ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose outrebounded American International by a 31-20 margin on the defensive glass, went 25-for-26 from the foul line and held the Yellow Jackets to 11.1 percent (2-for-18) shooting from the arc in the second half on the way to a 71-63
Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. In the process, the Golden Knights clinched a berth in the upcoming NE-10 Championship that gets underway next weekend.
Junior center
Dominykas Milka recorded his 16th “double-double” of the year behind 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead Saint Rose (13-12/10-11 NE-10), which has now won three of its last four. Freshman forward
Tyler Sayre also had a “double-double” with 20 points and 10 boards while senior guard
Andre Pope finished with 12 points, three assists and a like number of steals.
Junior guard Janek Schmidkunz paced the Yellow Jackets (9-15/6-15 NE-10) with 17 points while senior guard Ricky Hudson and junior guard Spencer Braithwaite tossed in 15 and 10 respectively.
The Golden Knights built a 10 point, 28-18, lead with 5:22 left in the first half after junior guard
Dan Mundweiler knocked down a pair of free throws. However, American International closed the stanza on a 20-12 jaunt that cut its deficit to a bucket, 40-38, at the break.
The Yellow Jackets then outscored Saint Rose 13-6 throughout the opening six minutes of the second half to assume a five point, 51-46, advantage before the Golden Knights scored seven unanswered points to take the lead for good, 53-51, after Sayre and Milka both converted a pair of free throws.
They eventually boosted their advantage to eight points and after American International pulled to within four, 67-63, in the final 45 seconds, Saint Rose sealed it by draining four free throws and forcing the Yellow Jackets to come up empty on their final two possessions.
Prior to today's contest, Pope was recognized during a pregame ceremony as part of “Senior Day” festivities. He has made 107 starts throughout his career and this afternoon became one of only five players in program annals to record 1300 points (1308) and 300 assists (381).
Looking ahead, both teams close out their 2012-13 regular-season slates with 7:30 pm games this Tuesday. The Golden Knights will travel to New Haven while the Yellow Jackets will head east on the Mass Pike for a date at Assumption in Worcester, MA.
