Box Score

FLORENCE, SC – The College of Saint Rose suffered a heartbreaking 3-2, 11 inning setback today as host Francis Marion forced extra innings with two runs in the ninth and then won it with an unearned tally in the ninth. The win allowed the Patriots (4-3) to take the weekend series after the two squads split yesterday's doubleheader.

Senior catcher Jacob Golliday scored the winning run from first base on a bunt single and an ensuing Golden Knights (1-2) throwing error.

Junior right-hander Josh Johnson had an outstanding outing in his Saint Rose debut go for naught. Johnson allowed only two runs on four hits throughout 8.1 innings of work in a no-decision. He blanked the Patriots through eight innings as Saint Rose built a 2-0 lead heading into the ninth.

Freshman center fielder Derek Reed had two hits to lead the Golden Knights. Senior third baseman Kyle Charron had an RBI base hit while junior left fielder Brian Maynard and junior second baseman Joseph Carcone all had base hits as well.

Francis Marion junior right-hander Jeffrey Stoner allowed only two runs, one earned, on four hits throughout 8.0 innings. He fanned 10 without issuing a walk.

Saint Rose took a 2-0 lead in the sixth when Charron drove home Maynard on a single through the right side. Carcone also scored on that play courtesy of a Patriots throwing error.

Francis Marion then scratched out a pair of runs in the ninth, but left the bases loaded to force extra innings.

Saint Rose had a chance to go up 3-0 in the top of the ninth, but sophomore first baseman Zac Bellinger was stranded at third after he drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice by sophomore right fielder Lukas Nethaway, and moved to third on a groundout by senior catcher A.J. CAPONE. The Golden Knights also left two runners on in the eighth.

Meanwhile, the duel between Johnson and Stoner allowed the first eight innings to breeze by in a mere one hour and twenty-six minutes.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns to action on Saturday, February 23, with a 12:00 pm doubleheader at defending national champion West Chester (PA). Meanwhile, the Patriots return to action next Saturday with a 1:00 pm twin-bill versus Seton Hill.
