Box Score

PHILADELPHIA-In a match-up between two of the country's most renowned NCAA Division II programs, Philadelphia University came up with a steal in the final minute to stave off a comeback by The College of Saint Rose and thus hand the Golden Knights a 73-69 defeat during the first day of action at the East Region Classic that is being hosted by Holy Family University.

Sophomore forward Tyler Sayre tossed in a career-high 25 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead Saint Rose (0-1). Also, senior center Dominykas Milka registered a "double-double" behind 14 points and 14 boards and in the process became only the 27th men's player Golden Knights annals to record 1,000 career points (1,006).

Senior guard Kareem Thomas tossed in 15 points while freshman guard Isaiah Cosbert added five points in 10 minutes throughout his collegiate debut.

Meanwhile, sophomore forward Peter Alexis tossed in 24 points on 11-for-12 shooting from the floor and junior guard Nick Schlitzer had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (1-0), who are the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Southern Division preseason favorite.

Saint Rose trailed throughout the final 26 minutes and was down 11, 60-49, at the midway point of the second stanza, before a 12-5 spurt in the final four minutes dwindled a nine point, 66-57, deficit into a two point, 71-69, margin with 18 seconds left. A layup by sophomore forward Chris Dorgler, a pair of 3-pointers from Thomas, another trey from senior guard Dan Mundweiler and a Milka free accounted for the spurt.

Thomas then came up with a steal at the other end, but Sayre's jumper with a chance to tie it with seven seconds left rolled out. A turnover following the ensuing offensive rebound pretty much sealed the victory for Philadelphia. Schlitzer then made two perfunctory free throws at the other end for the game's final two points.

Looking ahead, Saint Rose will conclude its weekend in Philadelphia tomorrow with a 4:00 pm tip-off versus the host Tigers. Meanwhile, Philadelphia will take on Assumption at 2:00 pm.
