Box Score
ALBANY – A late rally by The College of Saint Rose came up short in an 88-78 setback to
Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm this evening at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The Golden Knights (7-5/4-4 NE-10) cut a 16 point deficit to eight in the final minute, but ultimately ran out of time and thus the Hawks (10-2/6-2 NE-10) were able to run their win streak to five games.
Saint Rose shot a superlative 52.4 percent (33-for-63) from the floor, but the Hawks bettered that mark by burying 56.4 percent (31-for-55) of their opportunities. Saint Anselm, the conference's most proficient offensive squad, also helped its cause by outscoring the Golden Knights 22-10 from the foul line.
Junior center
Dominykas Milka led four Golden Knights in double-figures with 26 points to go with nine rebounds and three assists. Freshman forward
Tyler Sayre wound up with 13 points while junior guard
Kareem Thomas and senior guard
Andre Pope finished with 12 and 10 respectively.
The Hawks led throughout the final 35 minutes and walked into the locker room up a dozen, 45-33, at the break. They eventually boosted their cushion to 22 points, 67-45, with 12:23 remaining after junior guard Dino Mallios converted a layup. Saint Rose twice got it back to 13 although Saint Anselm responded each time and were still ahead by 20, 78-58, with 6:05 to go after freshman guard Victor Joshua hit the second of two attempts from the stripe.
Regardless, a pair of free throws and a layup from Sayre coupled with a score by Thomas made it a 12 point, 84-72, affair with 3:02 remaining. The Golden Knights continued to hang tough defensively that yielded a 6-2 spurt and brought them to within eight, 86-78, after Thomas finished in the paint with 1:03 left. However, that was as close as it got as Saint Anselm wound the final minute off the clock.
The Hawks were as balanced as they were proficient on the offensive end. Sophomore forward Chris Santo came off the bench to lead a quintet of Hawks in double-digits with 21 points. Freshman forward Mike McCahey and sophomore guard Roy Mabrey scored 17 and 15 respectively, while junior forward Dominic Borelli and Mallios added 11 each. The latter also handed out nine assists with only one turnover.
Looking ahead, both teams have 3:30 pm conference games scheduled for Saturday. The Golden Knights will travel to Easton, MA to take on Stonehill, while Saint Anselm will host American International in Manchester, NH.
